ok guys my rig is the main rig in my sig. last night after 2 hours of mw2 my pc shut off. no warnings no hangups nothing. I have the fan control software running on the 4890 and it only gets to 70c after that long so no issue there. I restarted it and it ran fine again for another hour before I stopped playing.

Any ideas here?

your system shutting down once is not a pattern. establish a pattern then others can help.
in general you should probably open the case and spray out all the fans (case, MB, PSU, video) with compressed air
 
I do once per month, plus this would make somthing run hot which they arent. I just ran prime95(small ffts) and furmark stresstest (at the same time) for an hour without any issues.

complete loss of power in the middle of gaming? sounds like a power issue to me. test anything? psu? surge protector? ups?
 
OK I called pc power & cooling tech support. After chatting with they feel its a psu issue and have agreed to rma the psu. But, since I live in Canada I would have to pay to ship and insure the unit to Cali, and be without a psu for almost 2 weeks. They have a support office here in the Toronto area but its an OCZ office. He then offered me a direct exchange for a new OCZ GameXStream OCZ850GXSSLI .

I looked at this more myself, i am trading in a 5 yr warranty psu for a 3yr?? Should I do this? Thoughts?

uh, I don't know where you are getting that you have a PSU issue after your system shuts down once. If once a day, ok, that's a problem. But once? You might have cosmic rays knocking around electrons in your ram causing an error condition that results in a shut down. Impossible to tell. But I would not do anything based on my system shutting down once.

Though, I agree, I'd like to know how tech support figured it was your PSU. Did they have you do any tests?

I'm too lazy to google, but did you find any proper reviews on that GXS850? If it's FSP Epsilon based, don't bother. You could always buy a new PSU and RMA the old one, then sell the replacement when it comes in, or keep it as a spare. Then again, this is all assuming you actually need a new PSU.

why do you think you have an issue because it shut down ONCE???

if you were in the middle of gaming you have no idea what else was going on in the background.

did you use the Event Viewer to see what caused the shutdown? That would have been one of the first things I looked at.

It seems very premature to immediately assume it's a PSU issue without looking at the software side first, especially for a one time incident.

having done tech support and also talked to a lot of tech support I find a lot of them to be useless, so yeah, the default answer that lets them get him off the phone is "here is an RMA, send it in". But I don't see anything posted here that would justify that type of action.

You're telling me software caused a loss of power? :confused: While that is possible and yes, I agree, you should do all those things to be thorough... I'd still test the PSU first, since the issue was a complete loss of power. And yes, if it only occurred once, I'd shrug it off after some quick tests.

no, you're not reading what I'm saying correctly

I'm saying the OS or something in the background could have caused a random shutdown. If you have windows updates on and it automatically downloads them, then once they are downloaded, 10 minutes later your computer restarts.

I know the PSU stares at you in the face as a culprit and I agree completely, I'm saying I would look in Event Viewer to see if it identified any cause of a shutdown, especially since this is a one time incident.

C'mon enginurd, I know you're better than this!

ok there is more to the story that I did not mention. There have been multiple occasions of none start up as well, I press the power button and it tries to start but doesnt after 1 sec. I then unplug the power cord from the back, wait 15 secs, plug back in and boot np. This has happened 6 times in the last 3-4 months. So this coupled with the latest, is what I described.

As for the software side, my updates do not download and install automatically, so thats out.

Ram: would more than likely get bsod and an error msg.
CPU: getting too hot i highly doubt it coolermaster 212+ hyper with mx-2.
GPU: never gets above 70c, again would get errror msg not shutdown.

These are why I believe it to be the early stages of the psu. I have noticed a large amount of these units (Silencer 750w Red Quad) becoming for sale as recertified. With like one small fixable part changed out.

I don't know, I could use my backup rig for 2 weeks but the cost for me to ship this to Cali will be approx. $30+ and 2 week turn around.(being in Canada)

I do like Danny Bui's idea of buying new and selling the rma unit. That might be the best of both worlds, or I could do that, and drop the rma'd 750 into my backup machine and sell the ocz stealthstream in there? Danny i did also try to look for "proper" reviews of the unit but realised that I may have not got the full model # from him. So, I am awaiting a response.

I actually didn't read the entire post... it was late, my eyes were tired, and yes, my brain was pretty much off by then. ;)
 
ok the rma was approved by PCP&C. They are setting me up with one of these which I can pick up nearby same without any charges.

OCZ Z850

If you take the cost out of his review it gets 9.5, 8.5 and 8. Seems ok to me and with full local swapout 5 yr warranty.

well thats what I was thinking after reading Jonny's review. I will make sure thats what it is before I leave tomorrow.
 
Well I picked it up this morning and they gave me that exact psu. What a nice job they did with the packaging and product, cloth bag for psu, nice foam packaging. It fired up right away and I cannot hear it at all. Looks like ocz has a winner here, oh and it weighs a ton, i could barely pick it up with one hand.

well it says a lot about ocz and pcp&c, I didnt even have to ask for it that was the replacement they decided upon. Sameday local swapout. GJ OCZ! Now if they can only get their ram sorted out.
