Hi again. Okay, so a few weeks ago I installed a new Corsiar 650W PSU in an old (2004) computer. I had to RMA the first one after it shorted everything and started smelling terrible, then weird things started happening with the second one. First, my system specs:
CPU: Athlon XP 2800+ (Socket A)
Mobo: Asus A7V8X-X
GPU: GeForce 6600GT AGP
RAM: 1GB Kingston
PSU (old): Apex/Allied AL-A350ATX 350W
And a SATA host controller for the SATA 80GB HD
Yeah, it's very old, but I wanted to give it to someone else and couldn't upgrade to a much larger HD without upgrading the PSU first. Then this stuff started:
1. Numerous blue screens of death, some of which cited a never-seen-before BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER error, which can mean a problem with almost any USB device despite me not having changed anything. Possibly, when I unplugged and replugged everything while changing the PSU something got antsy. The other blue screens didn't give any error code at all. Happened about twice a day for 4-5 days, then the messages vanished about a week ago and have not been seen since.
2. But a few days later I got a complete freeze where the screen went blank, sound cut out, and the comp had to be physically restarted with the switch at the back.
3. And during the whole thing, the audio port on my computer has suddenly taken on a 60-cycle hum of sorts. Okay, this was always there to a certain extent, even with my old PSU, but it was only noticeable at high master volumes. The audio port hum seems to be echoing and amplifying a sort of humming, chirping sound that happens (and I think always has happened) periodically somewhere by the motherboard and starts chirping really loudly when I do something process intensive: say, scroll through several screens of text quickly in a web browser. Is this just because I have a crappy old motherboard that takes excess PSU power and turns it into hums and chirps that drive me nuts? Is anyone familiar with this type of stuff?
I'm seriously considering going back to the old PSU and giving the comp away without changing the lousy old HD. Needless to say, any help will be highly appreciated.
