Weird problem at 1080p

Hello, :)

I've been having a problem in the last days. At times, the screen went black (like if the PC was idle) and the system totally got unresponsive. At first, I thought it was during gaming because overheating. Tweaked some stuff like fans' RPM and the problem apparently disappeared but reappeared soon even in the Windows desktop.

It never happens when I'm on resolutions like 900p. I'm right now at 1600x1200. So far, good. But a while ago, the video was going off at Windows start right after the video mode changed to 1920x1080.

During some of those reboots, I noticed that the screen flickered (again, only at 1080p) and some message in the systray warned about the video driver being reset or something alike.

I have no idea about what's happening.

I also did the following (when I suspected the problem was exclusive to gaming): ran a video card stress test for a big while but nothing bad happened. Then VSync'ed all the games to have a constant 60FPS and the problem went off. But since a few days ago, it started to happen right in the desktop and it was not possible to start Windows with no problems again at that given resolution.

Is this a hardware problem?

Thanks.

Since you mentioned video driver being reset, I would consider the usual uninstall driver, possibly use ddu driver cleaner and try newest whql driver for your card. You didn't mention what your card your using or what os your using but regardless its something i would try.
Without swapping drivers its hard to say for sure if the card is going bad

What display are you using? You didn't even tell us if it's an LCD monitor, an HDTV, or a CRT; you could even be using a laptop for all we know. Same thing with the video card. Also, tell us what kind of cable you are connecting with between the display and the video card - is it DVI, Displayport, HDMI? Also, what OS are you using?

I'm reinstalling the driver (with DDU first)...I have my doubts because I think I've done this at least one time since I bought the video card. It's a GTX770 and it's like 3 months old if much.

I'm using LCD monitor with VGA cable (DVI adapter).

Windows 7 64b

just a tip....if you post your make in the title of the thread you will sometimes grab the reps attention...of course this depends on whos card your using, but im seeing a lot more official reps here these days....heck xfx rep sent me a new cooler for my card just for creating a thread here:)

Hello Alvein,

Let me know what happens. Oddly enough, this is starting to sound more like a signal isuse.

When it goes black, does it recover or force a hard reset? is there any error message? have you inspected any temperatures during these events?

Contact me via PM or support@xfxforce.com for quicker resposes or RMA servicing.

Thanks

If you are connecting to the monitor with a VGA cable, then we really want to know the make and model of the monitor. Does the monitor have any option besides VGA?

Thanks to all for the replies. :)

That's great. Will try with this one!

The exact model is MSI GTX 770 Twin Frozr Gaming, but thanks for the interest.

What is a "signal issue"?

Most of the time, when this happens, the system needs a hard reset. But today, I was being able of entering my password and hearing the start tune, seeing the hard disk loading stuff, etc.

The error message, I commented something before, but checked the Event Viewer and found this: "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered".

About the temps ~37ºC when idle and a ~72ºC when gaming. Probably not a temp issue since the problem is variable, with things like FurMark it never happens...and shows up with the Windows desktop alone.

....

No problems since the last drivers install, but it happens so randomly that I'll have to wait maybe a few days to be sure. :(

Edit:

If you are connecting to the monitor with a VGA cable, then we really want to know the make and model of the monitor. Does the monitor have any option besides VGA?

Samsung SyncMaster SA550, with RGB and HDMI connectors.

My guess is just a bad card, probably a video memory instability seeing as higher resolutions are more memory dependent

Do you have another PC or a friends PC you can use for testing?
