Weird cooling issues - need advice

Last week I put together a new comp and the heat my CPU is showing seems a little off. Below is what I have:

MB: asus p7p55d-e
CPU: i7 860 (not overclocked)
Heat Sink: arctic cooling freezer pro rev .2

So the temps are as follows:

Idles at: 40c
Gaming jumps to: 60-70c

This seems a little high and I can't figure out why. Not sure if I should replace the heat sink or what. Any ideas?

When my friend first installed his Arctic Cooling Freezer HSF, it wasn't seating properly and caused hotter temperatures, but that was like 80° load.

I also found the Freezer to have too much MX compound applied to it for my taste and I removed about half and spread it out again.

That said, what is your room ambient temp and what is your case and airflow like? When that s775 system was built, the end result temps are pretty much the same as yours.

agreed with spare-flair depends on case and airflow check and make sure you sink is setting properly and not got to much goop on it

Thanks guys, just going to order a different sink as the heat sink isn't buckling down to the MB properly, but it feels securely on it, guess it isn't.

Depending on the ambient temps of the room, those temps seem pretty normal.

Agreed, I see nothing out of the ordinary with those temps and it appears you have EIST on which trades off a low noise low fan speed for higher temps at idle which is not an issue and the load temps are typical.

Until that cpu hits 80ish C (Realtemp) it is not even breaking a sweat.
