What happened, one of our big hitters go down or did the other teams just ramp?

OCAU 2-8-05: 293,834
OC 2-8-05: 286,606
[H] 2-8-05: 277,201

The other teams are ramping up. When I started [H] was at like 260k/day, assuies were 220k.

Now we are 280k/day, they jumped to 260k/day. Delta is only 20k/day now.

OC boys got some borning action going on over there.

yeah we're boned, the crossover point is way out in may now.

Not if the guy with those 400 systems gets them borged.

well i can only ramp so much... we dont have that many heavy hitters and some of the major players came back to other teams... either we get more people or we are defeated

im only putting out 7kppd and im the top producer in our team? people like 1920x1080i-How??? are putting out like 110kppd, OC-AMD 53kppd, etc

sorry... I had a box go down for a couple hours, and another for a solid hour. ... I had no idea about the impact :D

... I'm installing 2k on a new 2.8HT machine for some family (I LOVE my KVM)... you know what will be on it. and then my 2500+ will back up.

Yea, flecom brings up a good point, ever since Midnight left, we haven't really had a big hitter :(

We may not have a big hitter like Midnight anymore, but we don't need one either. We have managed to pick up the production from when Midnight left and added more to it and done it without one person carrying it all. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have Midnight back and it would be a hell of a boost in production.

I prefer the way we have done it lately. We've added new members and many people have expanded their production. I personally have about tripled my production. Sure, that's not saying much considering what I put out, but it adds up. I'm still looking to add another system in the next month and half or so and will be on the lookout for other things I can pick up along the way.

Numerous people putting out smaller production in the long run is better than a couple of people putting out most of the production. If I go down or have to quit for some reason, it doesn't hurt that much. Don't worry, I have no plans for my systems to go offline anytime soon. I've seen people building bigger and bigger farms lately and man it's addictive. I've almost had to hide my credit card from myself to keep from jumping on a couple of really good deals that I can't currently afford.

The bottom line is, we need to keep getting new members, keep the current members we have and for those of us that can, keep adding systems either by borgs or growing our farms or gardens. We have not slacked off production, the other teams have just ramped up more than us. That's not acceptable and we need to find a way to combat it.

Edit my last post: we're getting out e-butts kicked.

Can someone (hint hint DR_K13) post in the other forums to get folks folding again for the [H]? The asssuies did this and I'm thinking it helped out a bunch. Check the threads over there for some ideas.

Its hard work making b0rgs. I wish I had known about this sooner but i
have 8 machines constantly folding now for the team, I am lucky though
as my fiance doesnt mind the 4 machines at home running constantly
(then again she hasnt really seen the electric bill yet ;) ) If there was only
a way for us to get more free boxen or borgs!

I agree... We recovered the majority of the daily ouput after Midnight left, and, in the long run, having a ton of smaller folders is better than a few big hitters. That way when something happens to one of us (like yesterday and today, my cable service is down) it doesn't make a huge impact on the team. We need folders, plain and simple. But we don't necessarily HAVE to have the corporate giants just to retake the lead. We do need hard work, determination and more [H]ardfolders! (some extra cash always helps!)

I'm not, by any means, saying we should abandon our borging attempts at schools/work/etc/etc.... just saying that more people is better than fewer people

Keep on Folding!!

Could the good doctor ask steve to just add a mention about F@H in the wrap up of what's happening in the forums? Kind of like a sticky.

question:

as far as price/folding done, which CPU/platform gives the best result for dollar spent?
In other words, whats the cheapest new system someone could buy to get good results?
low end AMD 64 CPU?
low end Xeon?
Athlon XP's?

does CPU cache make a big difference? 256MB the lowest reccomended RAM?
for those of us who will think nothing at a $400 Video card upgrade...can we spend $200 every couple of months to add a system?

So far from what I have seen (am pretty new to it) AMD's work
a little better then Intels, my amd 2800 (oc'd 2033) does the same
unit 2x as fast as a p4 3ghz machine, but any machine that can
boot can fold :) with slower cpu speeds all you have to do is set
it to timeless work units, and they can still help the team.

Every little bit helps :)

IIRC someone was going through the differences between the P4 and celerons in another thread and the celeron's did amazingly well. Maybe a celeron...sicne they are cheap.

Edit: holy crap am I actually advocating the purchse of a celeron

i understand that. i dont have many older machines laying around any more, just an AMD 1200 thats not stable. But If I was to budget some money for a new CPU/Mobo, what would give the best return on the dollar?

I've made a spreadsheet that I have that kind of stuff calculated... hotlinks to Newegg,etc... the cheapest folding rig ($/GHz) is a Celeron D platform @ around $90-100.... but they're not the best folders... next in line are the Sempron 2200+ combos from Newegg.... and then the Athlon XPs and Semprons... all are in the $106-130 range ($/GHz)...

If you're just looking at price..... the Sempron 2200+ combos are the best deal.... at around $175 for board, chip, ram and PSU.....

Lets see that spreadsheet!

I can email it to you... I'm working on updating prices as we speak (between actually doing my job lol) I should have it updated tonight....

better yet, I should probably find a host for it... just make it html....

Keep on Folding!!

freewebs.com; the u/p if hardfolding/horde iirc. I'd be interested to see this too...

I sent an email to Steve asking him to add a note once or twice a week about the efforts of our team here.

please do. im willing to slap some cash to help fold for the [h]orde, but would like to make sure im getting the best value for my dollah

I switched my SN45G over to Team 33 on my lunch break. I tried to do it on my dad's PC as well but when I opened F@H the screen went black and I lost video, happened two times. Not sure what the deal is.

Oh well. Go Shuttle!!! I'll work on the other one after work.

looks like production is going up a little bit

Just refired up the dual MP box for folding.

Ok, I have 2 machines that I can turn into folders. I just need some cat 5 and some kvm cables. Anyone have spares? I have some stuff in my FS/FT thread (In Sig) that I could trade and I have some stuff not listed so just ask. LMK!

Post in the trade thread ^^ up there ;) I would offer to send you some cable
but i just used the last of it setting up my newest computer

I have a spool of cat5e under my bed. I can cut you off a few pieces but I cannot end them, I have the tools but I am colorblind and my fiancee who usually makes the ends is gone for a while. But i can send you some cable if you want. LMK.

Hmm i am color blind too. thankfully not that bad

I am happy to see so many new folders!
We need to keep this up!

Happy Folding!

IIRC I have Deuteranopia which is lacking one set of color cones....can't remember which right now. Mine is pretty bad.....lets just say other people have to give approval on colors of my clothes....cars.....etc.

Mmm. thankfully I only have to make sure I am REALLY wearing white..
and not pink. errr.. *cough*

damn pastels. was never much for easter anyways ;)

Today I added 3 GHZ of Amd glory to team 33 :p (2 CPUs, one 1.X ghz thunderbird, and one 2.0ghz throughobred) Thats in edition to my 2.3ghz Barton. at one time I did have 30 computers folding, but now its just 3 :(

I appreciate the offer but I dont have the equipment here to finish them off. I just posted that request not expecting any replies. It just goes to show how wiling people are to help out for a good cause. Thanks!

Keep Folding. I have several members of my family who have cancer and my daughter is sick with a rare blood disease that this sort of research helps. So, thank you everyone for this simply yet helpful act you are doing!

Well if I can get some finished cable I will pm you. Maybe I can convince my brother to stop by tomorrow.

I appreciate that. I can cover shipping and such. If there is anything you need just ask. I can just use the KVM's to set it up and then remove them and switch them to another box (for now).

Unfortuately the unfair child support laws here in MI limit my funds greatly (i.e. No lunch) :-(

Keep it up guys..you (even AU :) ) are helping to find a cure. My mom, grandpa, and daughter thank you.

For those who think we might now pass them darn aussies.
at least we have cooler computers

I must say. its a pain in the arse to mod on it while trying not to short it
and have to reboot wasting a minute of folding time

I think the Athlon 64's are the best folders right now. You could pick up a Athlon64 2800+ and a KM800 Mobo from the 'egg for around $180-200 right now, which is not too bad a price. I think the HT, 400Mhz FSB, improved FPU, low latency memory and larger cache make a big difference.

Right now I have a AthlonXP 2400+ (2.0Ghz) which folds the 600 point proteins at 50 minutes per frame (when no one is using the computer, of course)

I also have an Athlon64 3200+ (2.0Ghz, 1MB L2) which folds the 600 point proteins at 32 minutes per frame, 30 minutes at 2.1 Ghz.

My Athlon64 is folding 56% faster than the AthlonXP.

Even with the reduced cache and clock speed of the 2800+, it should still put up decent numbers. I think the AthlonXP is at the end of it's reign as the price/performance king of folding. The 2800+ can be had for $109 at the 'egg, and the 3000+ for not much more.

I don't have any first-hand information on the Pentium IV, though. Anyone else want to pitch in some info on the P4?

i *cough* have a p4 3ghz 512ram at umm *cough* work ;) folding
it was doing 241 pointers at about 14 minutes per frame during the day
and around 12 when i wasnt (i dont use it that much at work)

/compared to my rig ^^ that is a Sempron 2800 (2033 ghz 1g ram) that does the same 241
pointer in 4 1/2 - 5 minutes per frame/
