So WD made only 1 HDD that has 500gb platters, that's kind of strange.
Yeah, sort of surprised that they haven't done 2 x 500GB platters in the 1TB Black/Green models yet. Putting 2 platters in the 1TB Black would make it more competitive with the Samsung F3.
333GB? Weird, so they actually make 333GB platters and 320GB platters? (those in the 320/640GB drives) Or am I overlooking some obvious drive size/formatting issue?
Don't quote me on this, but I've always thought the 320/640GB drives have the 333GB/platter density with the head movement limited to 320GB. From a manufacturering standpoint, this would make the most since.
I just bought a WD1001FALS manufactured Dec 2009 and it seems to be 3 platter.

How did you find out?
I was originally aiming for the Samsung because of the platter size and the fact that it runs cooler and quieter, but like a jackass I went with the WD Black because of a sale. The WD is one annoying bugger, the idle seek noises are driving me nuts.
Now I wanna try to rid myself of the WD and get the samsung without much of a loss.
That article linked is over 18 months old. WD is well known for changing platter configurations without changing the model number.
With that said, does anybody know if the newer 1TB black drives have gone to 500GB platters yet? I've tried searching for part numbers but have come up empty so far.
I guess you could guarantee getting 500GB platters by buying the new WD1002FAEX drive.

According to a review at http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=870 the WD1002FAEX model is 2x500gb platters.
I weighed my Dec 09 drive against another 1TB black drive made in Feb 09 and they are identical. Also it is significantly heavier than my 640GB black drive. It's not proof, but I think it's likely that it's a 3 platter drive.

Currently, the WD1001FALS is a three platter drive. It could change over time as we don’t necessarily switch product model numbers based on platter count.
