WD Raptor Boot Problem

I got a new WD Raptor SATA150 yesterday from newegg. My HD setup prior to this was 2 IDE hard drives. I'm running Win XP SP2. I connected the WD Raptor to the sata power supply and to the mobo's sata port 1 ( mobo is a Abit AN8 Sli). I turn on the system and it begins to boot. I forgot that I had left my partition magic cd in the cd drive and it starts booting from the cd. I just hit the reset button and remove the partition magic cd.

As the computer is rebooting, my monitor says that it can no longer receive a signal. During boot up the HD indicator light blinks a couple of times but remains solid after a few seconds. The computer doesn't boot, and the monitor is in suspended mode with no signal. I disconnected the new stata drive and left my old hard drives connected and was able to boot into windows again.

The sata drive I got was an OEM, it didn't come with cables (or even a jumper pin to designate master/slave). So the sata drive doesn't have any designation on its jumpers. I thought that this would default to 'cable select' but I'm not so sure now.

So after I was able to boot back to windows with the sata drive disconnected, I decided to only have the sata drive connected to the mobo. So I disconnected the power and ide cables of old hard drives. Again I wasn't able to get a signal to my monitor. I tried to revert back to only having my old hard drives connected to the system so that I could do some research on the issue, but now my old drives were giving me the same problem.

I tried reseting cmos, but that didn't help. Does anyone know what I should try next? The new hard drive is not formatted.

The sata drive is the Western Digital Raptor WD1500ADFD. Thanks.
 
First, there are no master/slave designations in SATA, each channel is its own. No jumpers at all on the new Raptor is normal. Typically to install a SATA drive, you want to enable the SATA controller in the BIOS, boot into Windows, install the driver when Windows finds the controller and shut down. If your SATA controller also does RAID, make sure you're installing an IDE type driver and not the RAID as some have separate drivers depending on use. Some just use the same driver. Attach the drive, check your boot order in the BIOS to make sure it's correct and boot into Windows. Then go to Disk Management to find and format the disk. Good luck.
 
Hey thanks. I didn't realize that it didn't have a master/slave designation. It now occurs to me the purpose of the 4 seperate sata ports on the mobo. Now I'll just have to figure out how to boot back into my old configuration to check the bios settings for sata. I won't be using raid, so I will look for that specific setting as well. Much appreciated.
