CHECK THE BEST BUY WEBSITE FREQUENTLY AS THE DRIVE GOES ON SALE FREQUENTLY.

There are two versions of the drive now. One appears to be exclusive to Best Buy. Both drives have the possibility of being a WD Red or a WD White.

You can use CrystalDiskInfo to confirm before you crack them open.

Things to look for when in the store:

On the bottom of the box it will say where it was made. The preferred one is Thailand due to the larger cache.
Made in China: most likely 128MB cahce
Made in Thailand: most likely 256MB cache

Another thing to look for is the serial # prefix. Below is a small list of confirmed serial #s that match up to a specific type of drive found inside these units.

They will be, WD doesn't have any other 8TB HDDs.
And these are actually 5400rpm HGST Ultrastar He8 drives.

Not bad at all considering the WD80EFZX's are ~$280 on PCPP.

Do these drives come with the 3-year warranty you would get with the OEM or retail drive? Or would you need to send in the complete unit, including the case, to get warranty replacement?

You need the case for warranty. But since these are essentially Hitachi drives, you'll probably never have to worry about reliability.
My 32x Ultrastar He8s have been running 24/7 for quite a few months now without issues.

can't ya just stick it back in the case if there's a problem?

They limit order to 3 drives and I needed 9. I put in 2 additional orders of 3 each to bring it up to 9 and they allow that. I'm planning on using drives to upgrade my current 8x4tb Freenas setup having one spare drive just in case.

Good find!

The price is back up to $199, still a decent price.

That doesn't seem to be the same product on Amazon.

WDBCKA0080HBK-NESN
WDBBGB0080HBK-NESN

And on Amazon, while it says the other is WD Red, the $191 one you linked just says "WD Quality drives" whatever that means.

Same difference. They're mechanically the same 5400rpm Ultrastar He8, at most with slightly different firmware.

You sure? Google search says its the WD80EZZX, or in other words the green/blue drives, not reds.
I know, hence why I said that they're _mechanically_ the same ;)

Compared the housings and PCBs of actual Ultrastar He8, white-label 8TB, and Red 8TB (own all three models, though a LOT more of the actual Ultrastar He8s - see sig).
All exactly the same.

Notice on Best buys website it says "only at bestbuy". That's because they change their skus slightly to get out of price matching items.

The drives I posted on amazon do contain WD red's according to multiple online reviews. I guess I will find out when mine arrive.

*edit: meant to quote your post further up

The Amazon Reviews though are screwed up, because as usual they lump a thousand products under one purchasing link, so you never know which drive people are talking about.

For example, in the product description even the smooth cover Duo advertises "WD Red Drives", whereas the sharp edge chassis my book specifically says "WD Quality Drives".

Then in another thread I was reading people disassembling the Amazon WDBBGB0080HBK-NESN, and it didn't have red drives and same on NewEgg where they say its the WD80EZZX not the WD80EFZX 8TB drive.

Reviews are also saying that on the Amazon one, its a royal PITA to attempt to open, and tab breakage is likely, whereas the BestBuy one people all say it comes apart super easy.
opening the plastic case is tricky! See how to on youtube & make sure you are looking at late 2016 or after. the case tabs are U shaped, pointing back at you. Very unusual & you are certain to break some tabs off. There are 3 tabs on one side, and 2 tabs on the other side of the same end. The feet end does not have actual tabs. Several credit cards, then Torx 10 and Phillips 2). Drive has a large white sticker. Model WD80EZZX. Rated at 5V 440mA, 12V 550mA DC. No jumper pins and no place for them.

^ You can filter the Amazon reviews by specific model / SKU.
Ah thanks, but the Amazon reviews are then saying the exact same thing, that its the WD80EZZX not the WD80EFZX drives from the OP Best Buy unit:

0 out of 5 starsFive Stars
Byallanleeon March 23, 2017
Capacity: 8TB|Style: Single Drive|Verified Purchase
Inside is WD80EZZX. 5400rpm Helium drive. From my performance benchmarks it looks like a PMR drive rather than SMR one (e.g. Seagate

And further:
fyi: the WD80EZZX with white Label in e.g. the MyCloud 8TB is NOT a WD Red (that are WD80EFZX). The german NAS-Support told me yesterday, that it is a WD Green (what is going to become the WD Blue series).
So as I'm saying, I'm 99% sure the Amazon ones are not Reds, just the OP's Best Buy ones were Reds.

Ducman69 : Hitachi does not have any SMR drives except for the Ha10 (not He10).
Am not particularly fond of SMR.

On that note, watch out if you're shucking Seagate 4TB portable externals.
Around ~Dec 2016, they quietly switched from ST4000LM016 (PMR) to ST4000LM024 (SMR).

Ah cool, was afraid they'd cancel them.

I just got an e-mail that the item is out of stock so expect it between May 18-22.
