Thinking of buying 2 WD 36gb Raptors and just wondering if anyone has positive feedback with running this setup in RAID 0 as I have read a bit of negative feedback here, while all the reviews are great at the Egg and all articles I've found have been good.

Oh, and I have a 160 133 ATA Maxtor Drive. Could I use the 2 SATA WD 36gb Raptors for loading with the Maxtor IDE drive for storage? My main concern is stability, but performance definitely comes in at a very close second.

1) ppl w/ working raptors aren't likely to post up and say "hey it's STILL working flawlessly (unless they are crapping on someone's problem thread ;) ). As I just posted in another thread, you may want to think about retail packaging w/ HD's so you are sure it is packed up all nice. . .real stores are easier to exchange defectives at (usually), too.

2)Sure. why would having a drive on the ide channel affect stability of SATA? If you are worried about it, you can always back up your WHOLE 36gigs on the 160 gig drive no problem. even set up it's own partition, but if you are mirroring that may be overkill, depending on your needs.

I guess I wouldn't say my drives are super stable. It also depends on the stripe. They seem less stable at 16 k stripe then at a higher size (64k more stable). What I do is simply place the files that are most important on my IDE drives. I have to say that doing this has helped me keep from loosing files. Previously I would put all my files on my main drive. Then when I had a problem I would loose all kinds of stuff. Now the only thing I loose is my save game files and the time it takes to reinstall. Luckily this is pretty fast. I have to say that when it comes to performance for cost using raid is one of the best things you can do to increase your system speed. After a fresh install stuff opens so fast and you here the little scriggle from the drives and your in raid heaven. (sorry got too close to some paint fumes thes morning ;)

So I guess what I'm saying is that I like to reinstall my system all the time to tweek settings and what not so I have gotten good at not loosing files (ack...except for my Deus Ex save game files... :( . Stability is less of an issue this way. Not to mention that they run much better the less you keep on them.

I had no problems with my Raptor, but 36gb wasnt enough and I sold and got 2x250gb drives instead.

no problems at all though

up and runnin for over a year. Quick and never a problem
