I was wondering what is the lowest you can get the cpu's to idle at. Also at 0c wont the water freeze i belive.... sooo can you put antifreeze in there and if so do you special tubes or blocks for that.

How do you plan to get a watercooling loop to 0°C?

The BEST you're going to get from watercooling will be a floating point around ambient temperatures. Sure, I guess (thoeretically) you could have 0°C but it would be pretty hard to game since your fingers would be numb.

When you see people cooling below ambient temperatures they are using pelier cooling, phase change, liquid nitrogen or an interocitor.

Screw 0°C... go for the REALLY hardcore and work on 0°K!

Well... you could always use a chiller.
 
now now......if you live in the far north, you can plumb the rad outside the house and have 0 C (or lower) cooling with normal water cooling components.

as it stands, the original post is pretty silly, however maybe the OP is just an arts major and doesn't know any better. :p
 
I'm just waiting for someone to try geothermal cooling. 10 feet below ground it's always 60 degrees F or something. High power pump... 20 feet of buried copper tubing... let your imagination run wild.

Who's going to be the first to rent a backhoe and destroy mom's rose garden?

the ground temp depends heavily on groundwater flow, water table level and the goethermal gradient in your area.

where i live, it would make a lot of sense. i'm on back-filled marsh land. the water table is less than 1m below the ground, with substantial ground water flow from west to east. in other areas......less so. even if the ground is cool, soil is a piss-poor conductor of heat, meaning that the ground has to be very cool, or the ground water needs to flow quickly, in order to deal with a constant source of heat.

earth science can be interesting........when stress tensors aren't biting you in the ass.

I saw pics of someone who actually did this, they didn't go 10 feet deep though, only like 5. They had an Iwaki pump too I think, or something equivalent.

how deep you need to go, and how well it works really depends on where you live.

if you are in an area where everyone's fence tends to lean in one direction, you're in an area with substantial shallow groundwater flow, and geo-cooling works really well.

As for the geo-thermal idea... the way I understood it the loop was built as a closed loop, the copper passed the heat to the ground. Conductivity of the soil wouldn't matter so much since it would still be enough to absorb the heat from the copper loop "heat exchanger". What, that wouldn't work?

heat doesn't just disappear. you put it into the ground and if it doesn't go any where, the heat exchanger just gets hotter and hotter. how quickly the heat is carried away, and therefore how cool the heat exchanger stays and how much heat you can deal with depends on the conductivity of the ground and the rate of ground water flow.

i'm not sure if the load from a computer is small enough to work anywhere, however it's certainly a concern for people wanting to burry heat exchangers for reversable heat pumps. it's totally possible in my area, even if few people bother to do it, to burry the coils for a strong heat pump that then pumps heat out during the summer, acting as an air conditioner, and pumps heat in during the winter, supplementing or replacing the furnace. that technology certainly does not work everywhere.
