Wasteland 2 devs open Kickstarter

Notch, for one. Another 10k came from http://www.rpgcodex.net/ The admin of the site also donated 1k himself, so now the RPG community will not only get their own place, but their admin will be an NPC there, too. Kinda cool, actually.

I wouldn't be surprised if other 10k donations came from a group of friends, pitching in $2.5k each, or something like that.

That's one bad ass scorpion!

Can't wait for this game!

Yea, I dig the concept art. Fargo says the Scorpitron 2.0 will actually be that size in game.

Though, I may have to offer them a new logo ... ;)

There is a very extensive fan Q&A with Fargo and Avellone on reddit!

Another benefit of Kickstarter - not having to rush a product out the the door to meet publisher demands. Happy to hear that

[–]BrianFargoCEO inXile Entertainment 61 points 15 hours ago
The other huge benefit is not jumping through hoops to prove we know what we are doing or to make demos for trade shows. Development is a pure process.

[–]pov_dave 60 points 17 hours ago
As the kickstarter is reaching it's last few days, have you been contacted by any Big Ass Games companies that you've spoken to in the past about Wasteland 2? If so, are you at liberty to discuss what those conversations were like/about?

[–]BrianFargoCEO inXile Entertainment 182 points 16 hours ago
Of COURSE I have had some publishers call me to voice their interest in Wasteland and of me doing RPGs. I knew that was coming. I had one group that wanted to fund my marketing for a piece of the pie. I politely explained that we have an ARMY of fans who are better than any marketing campaign.

[–]pov_dave 76 points 16 hours ago*
That must have been very satisfying to politely tell the PR group to f#*k off!

[–]BrianFargoCEO inXile Entertainment 144 points 16 hours ago
Maybe ;)

[–]Intergaki 28 points 16 hours ago
Regarding ESRB ratings and the like. Considering that you're funded through Kickstarter and don't have a publisher breathing down your neck, do you feel you can make the game that you and the team want without any restrictions in that respect?

Are you looking to include more sensitive topics that you otherwise wouldn't have? Things like slavery, drug use, general naughtiness, etc.

Are you planning on targeting any specific rating for Wasteland?

And a big thank you for your previous work. Interplay was my favorite game company growing up. I loved near everything you put out.

[–]BrianFargoCEO inXile Entertainment 74 points 14 hours ago
I can pretty much guarantee this will have a minimum of an M rating. We don't plan to pull any punches when it comes to adult subjects. Our audience can handle this and it is the world the fans want to see. A post apocalyptic world is not a pretty place.

[–]ronin84 59 points 17 hours ago
Brian, could you tell us anything in regards to where you're going (or hoping to go) with the game engine? Obviously top down, but are you looking into isometric? Straight down? Fully rotatable (Neverwinter Nights)? Something like Van Buren? Would love to know your ideal goal with this.

[–]BrianFargoCEO inXile Entertainment 99 points 16 hours ago
I probably have not been clear on this but the main city exploration and battles will take take place on an isometric view. There will be limited zooming but unlikely for full rotation. And the world map which gives you the larger scope of the world may or may not be isometric. Straight down for that may suffice but I want to experiment to see if there is a nice look we can achieve with a more isometric angle on that perspective. I should re-iterate that these are the kinds of things that we will throw samples up to the forums for feedback. Once we agree on the look is when I turn the artists loose.

Avellone! What game would you like to make with your own kickstarter project? There were talks about a "spiritual successor" to PS:T?

[–]ChrisAvelloneCCO Obsidian Entertainment 49 points 14 hours ago
That'd be my top one, yes. I have a spiritual successor idea in mind from a mini-Planescape campaign I did long ago that I'd love to turn into a game.

[–]TanglebonesGWJ 24 points 17 hours ago
Hi Chris! What elements of the game do you expect to be involved with? If it's story, what aspects of the PS:T/Fallout:NV storylines do you hope to implement?

[–]ChrisAvelloneCCO Obsidian Entertainment 43 points 16 hours ago
Story, characters, area design, quests.

[–]TanglebonesGWJ 10 points 16 hours ago
Do you expect the plot to be tied to a specific main character and their emotional reactions like Planescape, or more free-wheeling, and open-ended?

[–]ChrisAvelloneCCO Obsidian Entertainment 36 points 16 hours ago
It's a party-based game, so my expectation would be it's based on your party's efforts, but I don't think that makes it any less compelling.

I'll also add that I don't feel the Nameless One in PST had an emotional reaction - the players did, and he was the cipher for it. I think this can happen whether it's a single avatar or a band of avatars.

[–]jamssi 45 points 17 hours ago
What kind of a game can you make with 2.5m in such a short period of time?

Where do you have to make tradeoffs so that kind of budget is enough?

[–]BrianFargoCEO inXile Entertainment 97 points 16 hours ago
First off... Thanks for showing up today. To answer the question: The things that we are "trading off" will be cinematic cut scenes and extensive audio from talking heads. Organizing and paying for cut scenes is a very expensive proposition. The fans have been very clear in their wishes of wanting more cause and effect and a bigger world and that is where we are going to spend our efforts. We also have the advantage in that we have the game systems in place which allows us to slide right into the sequel.

Why have 1 minigun, when you can have 3?

Bump to remind anyone who still wants to donate or increase their donation that the Wasteland 2 kickstarter ends 8am Tuesday morning. I just bumped my donation from $15 to 50.

Wasteland 2 has less than 35 hours to go until it successfully meets its Kickstarter goal, and some new developments have come up.

First, InXile has added a number of bonuses to the $30 tier. These rewards include a second copy of the game for any format (Windows, Mac or Linux), an extra set of character portraits for your desert rangers, a four episode video development blog, and a novella set in the Wasteland universe written by Chris Avellone.

Second, InXile will host a live stream tomorrow starting at 7 PM pacific time. In addition to throwing a party to celebrate the game's successful funding, they will also be answering questions from viewers. Attendees will include Atari founder Nolan Bushnell, Chris Avellone, and some "surprise guests". Brian Fargo will give out the stream address tomorrow afternoon on the Kickstarter page and his Twitter.

Lastly, No Mutants Allowed reports that Uningine's CEO Denis Shergin has offered to support the game by giving InXile a free license to use their engine.

That would be totally sweet if they developed Wasteland 2 on UniGine, isometric 3d goodness!

Upped my pledge from 16$ to 30$, I figure that extra 14$ is worth it for the soundtrack, art book and novella. I can't spend any more then that though cause I'm still kinda broke.

They also added another copy of the game for $30. I personally am getting a few extra copies to give away.

That would be cool. Good move by UniGine too, they seem to have a good game engine crippled by no commercial projects giving a shit. Oil Rig is the only game I can think of that uses it.

Actually feasible too since it is apparently also available for Mac and Linux, which inXile pledged.

If Wasteland 2 is made using it, and is a successful game, it could lead to some more interest in UniGine.

Of course who knows how the development tools for it are, that could be a sticking point.

I've decided to get the $55 International Digital Package. Don't know when they added this, but its perfect for supporters like me who live outside of US and would rather not deal with all the shipping hassle. :D

This project is something that I actually have lots of interest in, beats getting another generic action game. What really attracts me is the fact that there's no publishers involved. This allow the creator to do whatever the hell he wants with it with no restriction, and also the freedom to pay attention to what the fans want.

I know its still a long way, but I can't wait for the beta already :p

A side note on this whole kickstarter thing, I think it was Gabe Newell who first mentioned about this concept of fans paying for a game before release to support its development. Back then I thought Gabe was on something, but to my surprise it seems to be working and even I am doing it myself now. We're now seeing ideas of great old franchise or genre that those big publishers would toss into the bin instantly now being revive. I'm pretty excited to see where this takes PC gaming to.

Hrm I've never played a game like this (was fairly young when FO 1&2 were released) but it's a turn based RPG?

I'll probably throw in 50 or 100 to support them as it's one of my dreams to see sequels made to old games, even if I never played it :)

ugh 14 hours -__- does not have $150 today, but want give. Gonna be a long night.

Ya. It was the original turn based post-apocalyptic RPG game. Fallout 1 then happened because they couldn't get the rights to make Wasteland 2.

So same sort of Fallout setting: Future dystopia after a nuclear war. Combat will all be turn based tactical, view will be overhead of some kind probably a 3/4ths isometric but they haven't decided yet. All party based, you start the game with a party you make.

If you wanna try a game like it go pick up Fallout 1, 2 and Tactics from gog.com, Steam, Impulse, or wherever you like for that kind of thing. They run fine on modern 64-bit systems believe it or not. Fun games. In terms of Wasteland 2 combat is more likely to be like Fallout Tactics in turn-based mode, whereas gameplay is more likely to be like Fallout.

However it won't be the same, in part just because it is newer, but also because Wasteland is a different kind of universe. Same idea for a setting, but different in the particulars.

It works fine in DOSBox. It may require a few adjustments, but even the C64 version works in a C64 emulator, so I hear.

$3 million milestone reached!! Yeah baby....modding tools incoming!!!! :D

Possibly. Note that they didn't promise modding tools at $3 million, they said they'd be possible at that much. They just said that at $3 million they could do a mod kit without cutting in to the main game and if (they bolded it) they decide to release it, it'll be after the game launches.

Just want to make sure people aren't getting worked up over features that might not make it :).

Make sure to post on the forums and let them know you are interested in such a thing. Also let them know that you'd like them to store data in user editable formats so that even without a mod kit, changes can be made.

Well, you will still be able to buy it when it comes out to show your support. Good times incoming!

i talked one of my friends into splitting the $30 one with me. so he can have some extra fluff stuff.

i just wanted to make sure they got some money from us now rather than later.

every little bit they had gotten will just make the game that much better hopefully

Right on! Gonna be a long 18 months though. :)

A method by which we can get all our favorite games...good years to be a gamer I think.

Went ahed with $1000 all you bitches will deal with me in the game now.

pics or shins.

I didn't donate anything :( I literally had a tooth knocked out (had a root canal yesterday morning.) and signed up for $4000 braces this week. I feel really bad. I wanted the backer t-shirt but couldn't the money together in time :(. So I guess I'll just do the pre-order, and then I'm try and give some money to Shadowrun and Grim Dawn when I get paid.

I wanted a T-shirt too, but I didn't feel ready to donate an extra $50 on top of my donation just to get one, since that was the only extra thing gained at that level.

Lol JK!

Ya well, unsurprisingly the higher you went up the tree in donation levels, the more diminishing the returns. In part that's because you started talking physical goods, which of course cost money to hand out. Wouldn't work very well for them if the $100 reward tier cost them $85 to hand out the goodies, that wouldn't raise funds very effectively :D.

I also thought a T-shirt would be cool, but wasn't willing to donate that much. Only so much I'll kick in for any one project because, as I've mentioned in Kickstarter threads, it IS a risk and there's only so large of one I'll take.

I went for the boxed version because I'm a fan of boxed games, even in this age of DD, and $50 is about my level of risk tolerance for this kind of thing.

You can still pre-order for $20 from the wasteland page, so at least then your money is still going towards development.
