I got my new Plextor M5S 256 drive yesterday. Installed it the computer. Installed a fresh copy of Windows 8 pro, and it works. Did I miss anything? Is that really all there is to it?
 
He means ACHI mode. You can find it in your BIOS under the hard drive settings. You should see IDE, RAID and ACHI modes.
 
Missed ahci as others have said, you're going to need to do a full re-install

unless something's different about Windows 8.. there are ways around a reinstall for AHCI.

Search for "Change from IDE to AHCI Mode after Installation" in Google. I believe there is a registry patch you can install also instead of editing it by hand. Once you run it, go into the bios to flip it to AHCI, then reboot.
 
I did set AHCI in the bios before I installed. Read that here. :p

So turn off indexing... I see defrag is on under optimization. turn that off?

No, not necessary to do either of those things. There is no reason not to have Windows index the drive for search. Windows will not defrag the SSD...it may be turned on in the system but it will by default skip defragging the SSD. You should be good to go, enjoy!

This. The indexing that windows does is fantastic for HDD's and phenomenal for SSD's. I don't know why anybody would give that up unless they have a truly rational argument.
 
Yeah, personally I much prefer having indexing enabled, no need to disable unless you really want to. AHCI is good to have on, otherwise it's ready to go.

in HDD is perfect , not in SSD..
do we need indexing all the time? if yes, leave windows indexing service running.
I do not need indexing all the time.

try to use "everything" , as someone posted on this thread

Yeah, that's why I explicitly stated that the only reason that I disable it is because I don't use it myself. I have a separate backup system and I keep my computer on 24/7 so I don't need either of those two functions. Of course, other people might but if you never plan on using system restore then you can save a bit of (relatively expensive) SSD space.
