Warhammer Online Thread!

i don't know how much you'll like WAR since it's going to copy everything it can from WoW.

Not true exactly. There are similarities yes (Both games are using the same original source material) but to say WAR is a carbon copy of WoW is just silly. I've been playing the WAR beta for quite some time and the game does have enough original ideas to stand on it's own. Also, this game is much more focused on group PVP or RvR as it's known so it really is at the heart of the game. That being said, you definitely aren't forced to do any RvR ever if you so choose but I don't know why anyone would do that. *shrug*

Six weeks to go, and they still have to squeeze in Open Beta (more like Open Demo), and the Head Start for preorders.

9/18 will come quick.

I have beta tested almost every MMO and I don't really care about the NDA anymore...that being said, WAR is not ready for release in my opinion. The amount of bugs, bad animations, poor player skins, bad pathing, and public quest wonkiness has me worried. I think the reviews will be average at best. I hope they make enough money from the diehard followers to patch it up to somewhat close to WoW's polish (WoW at release). Some may think that is crazy with all the bugs that WoW had at release (I was there with the early hunter bugs and terrible mailbox lag) but this game isn't anywhere close to ready in all other aspects. I will say the Tome of Knowledge is great...I mean really good. The PvP is fun to an extent (I like starting PvP right away), and the sounds are fairly solid. I just feel like EA is pushing this before it is truly ready. I know MMO's are never really "ready" for launch. I just wish it was bumped another 6 months.

Obviously, I come across as happy with some aspects and not with others. I want to believe in this game and I want to support their great ideas....they just need to get busy making their ideas work better. I will probably buy the standard edition and get to smashing stunties ASAP.

Sadly, no MMO is trruely ready for release. They have to launch sooner or later. That being said this game is in much better shape than AoC in terms of basic features and content. Most of the bugs are cosmetic in this I'd say. Funcom has yet to add any substantial content patches and it's been 3 months since they launched their game.

Mythic is still making tons of changes. The patch they released for the "other" beta server (that less people have access to) for example, added new art for the player skins including new faces, hair, etc. I'm much more confident in Mythic when it comes to fixing and adding things to the game than Funcom in this regard. They've still got a month. Let's see what they do.

I said the same things about Funcom and AoC though and we all know what happened there.

Mythic is great for adding free content and constantly tweaking things, that much I remember from Daoc. I also remember the unfinished state Daoc was in at release. But I'm sure after release we will see all kinds of things constantly added.

That said, I've no doubt that EA is the sole influence in dates getting moved along, motivated by WoTLK release. That has led to some strange things, like class/city removal which changes the basic structure of the game. I dont think thats a decision Mythic would have made on their own. The game has a bunch of quirks because of that...want to play an orc, a staple Warhammer race? I hope you also like playing a tank, because now thats the only choice for orcs. Its like this was basic Dungeons&Dragons, where all dwarves were fighters.

I'm a bit confused as to how the RvR works in WAR. In DAOC there were 3 races, each with a variety of classes, that fought for control. In WAR there are 6 races, and 2 sides. Do the 2 sides fight, and you can have any of the 3 races on a team, or is it every race for themselves, or is is some sort of hybrid of these?

Basically 3 groups of 2v2 but there's 2 main groups of Order (good) and Destruction (evil). Any of the races can group and meet up with the other races on their side.

The thing that worries me about this is the class balance. If in one race it is only worthwhile to go one class, then how can they effectively fight another race?

Are you saying it is possible to team Order with Destruction in PvP, or just one race of order with another race of order?

No, Order can only group with Order races and the same applies for Destro. You will never see orcs grouping with elves unless Mythic adds a co-op server like they did for DAoC.

The races that got their tank cut (Empire/Dark Elves) will definitely have a slightly harder time. You can definitely feel the difference of not having one for your race.

I think you're over-thinking it.

Basically it's Order VS Destruction.

Order comprises of Dwarves, High Elves and Empire.
Destruction comprises of Orcs, Dark Elves and Chaos.

In Scenarios and Open RVR, it's your team of Order VS the team of Destruction. So it could be a mix of dwarves, high elves VS chaos or orcs, who knows. Or all high elves VS a mix of dark elves, orcs, chaos, etc.

Here is some info on the release date and subscription pricing taken from Warhammer Alliance main page... Just posting so those can visually see.

Release Date
September the 18th is the official live launch date for WAR. Press releases at both of the EU and US websites confirm. Check out this thread for discussion.

Pricing
Along with the release dates pricing for both the EU and US have been announced and covered in both newsletters. There's an ongoing discussion topic here.
USD:
Monthly Subscription: $14.99 USD
3-Month Subscription: $41.97 ($13.99 per month)
6-Month Subscription: $77.94 ($12.99 per month)

Europe:
1 month for 12.99€ (£10.31)
3 months for 35.97€ (£28.55)
6 months for 65.94€ (£52.34)

Also not to confuse you that you're only limited to Greenskins vs Dwarves, Dark Elves vs High Elves and Chaos vs Empire. It's Order vs Destruction, whereas Orcs can party and even travel to allied territory to help fight. You can be a Black Orc fighting in Dark Elf territory providing their side a tank or a White Lion fighting in Dwarven territory providing them extra melee DPS on their end. So the class cuts only really hurt very early game and of course some fans who were deadset on rolling a Choppa or a Blackguard.

To add to the newsletter info, we can download the open beta clients on aug. 15 but still no anouncment of when OB will acctually start.

OMG! Only 8 days to go till open beta????????

OMGOMGOMGOMG

OH MY GOD

8 days til you can download the client, but I doubt the OB will start before Sept. They just want to get most of the downloading out of the way prior they open the serves to everyone (who pre-ordered).

Indeed. much wootage.

I personally can't wait till the NDA gets lifted.. is quite a pain to have been in beta since 8/16/07.. almost a year of silence :D

This game isn't anywhere near ready for release. There are a lot of bugs still the game that need to be worked out. I've experienced quite a few, some are more than just merely annoyances, and only been in the beta a few weeks. I don't think I've fallen through the game world in an MMO since Anarchy Online.

It's a fun game, but it's plays and feels just like WoW, without all the polish. The graphics are a step up from WoW, but the pacing, questing, archetypes, PvP, art style, character advancement... it's all just like WoW. The PvP is slower paced though. People who like fast paced twitch PvP will be dissapointed. Right now, PvP is very unbalanced in 1v1. Healers are way overpowered, and damage casters don't stand a chance against most opponents unless you have group coverage. Public quests are a cool innovation, lots of fun. I really like the Tome of Knowledge as well adds a lot of story to the game, so you just aren't grinding quests all day.

I think it'll be a fun game for those who like to PvP, but don't expect a game that's as big, balanced, and polished as WoW. Mythic doesn't have anywhere near the time, money, or resources that Blizzard does.

I'd give it a 6.5 in it's current state, if they polish it up maybe an 8, but it's gonna be a while.

This game was never really designed for 1v1 PvP. It's pretty much strictly group PvP which reduces ganking and allows for more tactics I'd say. Also there are two types of healers: Melee and caster healer. Since Empire and Dark Elves lost their racial tank, their melee healers have sort of been "buffed up" to fill in for a tank. Mythic is still drastically changing and tweaking the classes almost on a daily basis so I'd save judgment on how each class is performing currently.

Between the two I still think I'm more apt to enjoy the WAR universe rather than I did with WoW. Personally I'm more into when Warhammer 40k online mmo comes out in a few years. That's my main interest. But WAR looks pretty cool, i like the way they implemented the PVP and PVE on the same server (if I'm understanding it correctly). I hated on WoW I had to have a different character on a different server to play PVe or PVP..

This has to be the most harsh comments and preview I have heard... And you still gave it a 6.5... this just makes me more eager to play I have not heard any truely bad things about this game just good things.

Still debating ATM whether to pre-order or not.....><

Can always wait for open beta.

I'd say the main thing that will turn people off from this game (besides all the "It looks like WoW LOLOL!" comments) is the fact that combat is paced a bit slower. This will of course be compared to Age of Conan since it's also fairly new and has a "different" combat approach. Personally, WAR has much more content and depth at the moment to do fairly well. We'll see what Mythic does in the short term.

I hated the Age of Conan 1 shot your dead trigger happy combat speed. Coming from DAOC I loved the combat system never had any complaints so I am going to prob. love this game.

I understand the whole fantasy setting, hence the resemblance.. but graphics wise.. man, I can see a huge difference from the WoTLK beta screenshots and the game i'm playing.

Although not AoC graphic levels, still a discern between the WAR and WoW.

Everyone should reserve their judgment till the game comes out, because speculation from any of us can be FUD.

If you like WoW, and you like PvP, you'll like this game. It's fun, but it's pretty much just WoW in a new wrapper and lots of PvP thrown in. Just don't expect the same sort of PvP balance that WoW has. In general most WoW classes have a chance against any other class, in WAR many classes stand no chance in 1v1, especially casters. It's a group PvP game.

Call me back in 6months once this game is close to ready. I was in the Beta3 and it totally blew, felt like a game at least a year from release, and now due out in one month  They must have been holding all the good stuff out of the beta I was in this Summer.

The combat in the game is freaking slow, I am used to my WoW Rogue-combat character and my guy is lightning fast attacker, there is nothing even close to that in WhO, and I tried all the classes. The game world feels stale and boring, not alive like in WoW with all the little things.

And for a game engine 5 years ahead of WoW, I am shocked at how little difference it looks from WoW, sure it is better, but not what you would expect for a game 5 years newer. I sense another Vanguard here, a game with great promise but will never live up to its original hype. And don't even go there with this being a WoW killer, please that is just insane this game has no chance in hell.

Not sure but I didn't check into the social part of the game or the Guild stuff they had last beta, but is there like Auction Houses and things, and gear that can be upgraded and sold ? I really like that about WoW.

Also for me, which I am a PvE player, PvP is for kids, I like a game that my friends and I can just go questing off into the woods and get lost, but this game is geared way too much for PvP shit

We shall see...

I agree, in Beta3 when I was playing my swordmaster Elf or whatever he was called, I was like WTF why is my go attacking like he is under water = so freaking slow, and the combat animations were the same over and over, seemed so cheap to me.

All you WoW Rogue players will NOT like this game

That is pretty much how classes are suppose to be... If you follow the original D&D templates (Which the modern day MMORPG is based off of heavily) its a big rock, paper, sissors battle. Tank should have a tough time against Mages with range... Mages should have a tough time agaist rouge type classes. Rouges against tanks etc. WaR is not suppose to be all about me its about massive epic battles that depends on your teamwork. Reason its called RvR not PvP... All classes should have different strengths and vunabilities.

You were the guy that tested it in alpha phase and now just trashing the game and havent played it since many months ago? Looking at your posts history you have been always skewed against the game and supporting WoW you seem more like a troll to me then a constructive beta tester.

I've preordered the collectors edition and recently got into the closed beta. Can't say a whole lot but going by the released screenshots (don't want to lose my account for breaking NDA :p) the graphics are definately coming along (especially the lighting recently). Just have to keep in mind that atm the screenshots are taken at the lowest settings, can't change any graphics options atm.

I cringe at the thought of going back to WoW, ever since I quit pre BC. Now about what he said..combat being slow he is right on point. Was in closed beta and unless they got a PvP Ace card they are not showing yet you will be seeing a Warhammer forum full of whiny internet raging kids about what is broken.
They got some great original class ideas like the marauder and witcher which I like.Melee however seems severely helpless and underpowered vs the range/casters.
RvR is alot like Southshore vs Tarren Mill: Get flagged, pick a fight, opposing player runs 80 yards back to his area, More opposing players join in, you and your group get outnumbered therefore you run back to your area, grab more friends and you outnumber them so they run back...rinse and repeat.

The mini PvP games are decent but I haven't had much experience playing them. Its more like control the flags/nodes.

Playing both AoC and Warhammer this year just made me realize what an awesome no legendary gaming company Blizzard is. And I still hate WoW.

Help us Bioware you're our only hope.

Was beta down all last night for anyone else? After the patch it would fail to authenticate most of the time and a few times it would crash when loading my characters. Really frustrating because I am trying to get some really heavy testing in for bug submission. I want to help this game but I need to be able to log in.....

Did you read the forums? They took it down to patch and get ready for the next phase.

I just played the game in Beta 3.1 recently back in July. I really want the game to do well, it is good for competition, and will keep Blizzards on their toes, and I know it is NOT supposed to be WoW2. I am looking for a new game to get me away from WoW. I will say this WarHammer Online will be the only game to be a true #2, all other recent MMORPG's are not this good. The game could be really cool, but surely needs more time.

But...there was just something missing in this game, well at least the latest beta I was playing last month. The game world did not have the inviting feeling like WoW has, I mean the atmosphere in WoW oozes this little world that seems alive, where as WarHammer Online felt stale or cardboard to me, sure the graphics will be better than WoW but they should be this game engine is 5 years newer, but something just does not feel right in this game world when walking around, I had the same feeling in AoC and Vanguard.

One thing I really do not like though is the turtle paced combat movement, it is just so slow it gets annoying, and the combat animations seem repeated like the same thing almost >?

The biggest deal for me is, PvE my Brothers and I play a MMORPG to go out and explore the world and quest away and just get lost together, I could care less for PvP. I have been playing WoW since November 2004 and never once tried the PvP in that game and don't plan too, I want to play the story driven game with a group of Guildies. To me WarHammer Online focuses way too much on PvP, I just don't see all the rage for that stuff
