Want to Raid0 2 Different SSD Models

I am looking to use a HW Raid0 with two different models of the same SSD. The Kingston HyperX SH100S3/120GB and the Kingston HyperX Shh103S3/120GB. Is it safe to assume I should be okay when using this setup with the raid controller on my MB "ASRock Extreme4 Gen3"? Are there downsides to using this kind of setup? I will be using this on Windows 7.

SH103S3:
Max Sequential Read: Up to 555 MB/s
Max Sequential Write: Up to 510 MB/s
4KB Random Read: Up to 85,000 IOPS
4KB Random Write:Up to 73,000 IOPS
MTBF: 1,000,000 hours

SH100S3:
Max Sequential Read: 550MB/s
Max Sequential Write: 510MB/s

Here's the deal on RAID0........it doesn't matter if the drives are mechanical or solid-state.

A RAID system will only perform at the slowest,smallest and least amount of cache of any drive in the SATA array.

In your case, you'll never notice. :)
 
Old Hippie is right, you won't notice.

I will comment on striping 2 SSD's. I've been there, done that, and noticed no improvement at all for everyday use, including gaming.

In fact I went back to a single SSD as my boot drive. I was using 2 Corsair Force 3 drives (128GB) and replaced them both with a Samsung 830 256GB Pro drive.

SSD's are so fast that I feel there is no point, unless you are running some extremely intensive disk I/O tasks. Perhaps SQL Database, or maybe 3D modeling?

Will benchmarks show that your Raid0 is fast, of course, as they stress the Disk, but everyday use won't and you honestly won't "feel" the speed.

I had my Raid0 fail once as well, annoying, as you have to re-install windows. Or if it were a data only drive, you'd loose all your data if one fails.

Just some thoughts to keep in mind.

Bottom line as Old Hippie said, it'll work but you'll never notice the slight performance difference.
 
You MUST have a back-up for RAID0 if it contains pertinent info.

I've been runnng RAID0 for @ 3 yrs and the only reason to "break" the array was 3-4 times for SSD failure.

It really doesn't matter.....you ALWAYS need a back-up.

I have no sympathy for those that come here crying about lost data because they didn't have a back-up.

I'm sure you won't be one of those guys.......right.....:)

Thanks for the information. I am amazed, because the performance with Raid0 and SSD increase linearly. However, it may not be true. Sawk, do you have any links or videos depicting this? I am quite interested. The link below got me interested in SSDs and Raid0s. However, if it doesn't have any real world gains for general consumer's performance, then I am not interested. And no, I will only use the Raid0 setup for an OS and a few games.

because the performance with Raid0 and SSD increase linearly.

The linear increase is happens with large sequential reads and writes and not as much for 4K reads and writes.
 
Like I said benchmarks, like the one you linked show there is a benefit. I just never felt that it was any faster for what I do at home on my rig.
 
Those benchmarks show improvement in server loads and high queue depths. Although I may not have read far enough to desktop loads.

There's no way we can consider what you call
real world gains for general consumer's performance
because that's a personal decision and we ca't read your mind.

My 4K-64Thrd increased significantly in my set-up but that can be effected by how you set the Stripe in the BIOS.

Sounds like you really need to do some research to understand RAID. :)
 
I did RAID0 on an OCZ and a Microcenter SSD because they were both 64GB drives and I needed more space and didn't want to spend any money. It's worked fine, and like mentioned the speed difference is inperceptible. They are both SATA2 and it maxes out the SATA2 bus.

Generally in my day to day activities I find a gigabit NIC to be the biggest bottleneck. Maybe affordable 10gb NIC's will be the next "big thing".
