Hey all,

Everytime I seem to restart my computer, my wallpaper settings get lost. I just noticed that tonight, when I set my wallpaper to a different background (stored in the 'My Pictures' folder), I got this problem. In a nutshell, everytime I restart the computer, the desktop is a solid color-all icons are there, just no background. Then when I go to the display properties and click on the wallpaper and apply, nothing happens. However, if I set it manually to a blank background, then to a picture, it works (but just for that session).

I have scanned my computer with SpyBot, eWido, and Adaware, but no results turned up. I haven't done anything different to the computer recently except change the theme. However, I have had themes for ages on my computer. Also, none of the web settings in the display control panel are checked off.

Stats are:
Windows XP SP2
Athlon XP 3000+
MSI K7N2-L
1 gig Kingston PC3200
Geforce 6600 GT

Any ideas? Thanks for reading.

What about if you try to use a wallpaper in c\windows\web\wallpaper, does it stay set after a reboot?

Yea, it still stays the same. I wonder what it could be, as I haven't changed any settings. I even reformatted and checked to see if active desktop was turned on, but it wasn't.

UPDATE: I moved my wallpapers folder out of the My Documents folder and just into the main C:\ directory and everything works okay. Any idea on why the permissions are all messed up?

I assume you are talking about logging in on the same user name as the My Docs file that the image is stored under, yes? If not, you could place it in the "All Users" folder to be able to access it from multiple profiles.

not sure, Ive seen the same thing on a few machines that Ive rebuilt for folks.
I just make sure to put any wallpapers they want into the c\windows\web\wallpapers folder, I wonder what would happen if you put a shortcut in there to the my docs\my pics folder....>?

I have a slightly different problem that I don't know if is related:
Now and then, the wallpaper is reset from centred to stretched when I log on. Slightly annoying.

If your the location where the background file is stored on a network it will cause this problem. For example, we have many user who have their My Documents redirected to a network share. If they have applied a background from their My Documents, the problem you described occurs.
