Well. I have been very pleased with the results of my recently built rig seen here.

But you know how it is.... we're always dreaming about new boxen so off to Fry's I went to see what deals I could find. I'm digging through the open box junk and what do my eyes see??? It's an AMD Sempron 2400 with 128mb of PC3200 and a 40gig Western Digital HD.It's all nicely put together in a small black case with a psu, floppy and a cd-rom. It even has a keyboard, mouse, and speakers. All for the low, low price of $129!!!

I grab it, buy it, and run home. I opened it up added an extra 256 pc3200 of ram and an 80mm exhaust fan.(Didnt come with any fans)

Here she is...

What do you think???

Their is an open box area at Fry's? Your Fry's is better than my Fry's. :( Great find though.

It's really just a table with returned and open items. Where are you from?

Replace the PSU now or replace the box later

But still a good deal! :D

Ahhh man, I thought I was set. What's a decent and cheap PS?

If that was at the indy store I'm gonna be pissed cause i've never seen it in there before. Whats that sempy run at and how much cache does it have?

Dallas. :D

I have to look into it. I'm kinda worried cause I checked the systems info screen and it says I've got a AMD Athlon XP 1ghz.

Ahhh...Great Quality PCs...gotta love them. Good for the geek I guess, but for the home user, they suck. I see more of those in the return line than you would expect and I've seen them force you to pay separately for them so they're on a separate receipt...

Good luck with it. :)

300-ish watt fortron should do fine. probably run you ~$30 at newegg.

Well, I've got it up and running and I'm impressed. It's pretty quick and very quiet. Here are the cpu specs:

AMD Sempron (Thoroughbred)
2.0ghz
L1 cache 64+64
L2 cache 256

The mobo has all the settings needed for oc'ing. I'm sure I can push it to at least 2.2ghz but I need a better ps before I try anything. :)

Nice find! Am I the only one who can't see the HDD in those pictures?

lol. I wondered why no one had asked. The drive was being "imaged" by my main rig when I took the pics.

Ahh a 2.0ghz thoroughbred, I had a 1700+ back in the day, it was the first cpu I ever overclocked and it treated me well before I jumped into an AXP-M. The 1700+ would do 2.1ghz with no problems. So assuming they've tweaked the core since the one I had you should get 2.2 or out of it. That running the 166 fsb or the 200 fsb? And I'd like to say that you got darm lucky getting a board with overclocking options. I'm surprised. Good luck and happy OC and folding!

South of Phoenix. I shop at the Fry's on Baseline Rd. Across from the mall. Most of the stuff that is brought back here is usually put back on the shelf with a sticker on it.

I think this is all discontinued stuff. We also have the sticker deal.

200mhz and yes..I was lucky.

The mobo has the option to go up to 250mhz. It also has memory divider settings.

Edit:

OMG!!!! I am overclocking and didnt even realize it. When I first booted the system, my cpu was only running at 1ghz. I checked the fsb and saw that it was set to the minimum. I jumped it up to 200mhz and rebooted at 2ghz. It's been folding @ 100% for 24hrs without a problem. Here's where it gets funny. I chose 200mhz because I assumed the Sempron 2400 was supposed to run at 2ghz like my old Athlon XP 2400 did. I figured 2400 is 2400 right? Well, I was just browsing the cpu specs on amd.com and it says that the stock speed is 1.67ghz (166fsb). LOL!! I overclocked and didnt even know it. :p

Also, amd says that max temp on the cpu is 90c. Isnt that really high? I'm only at 45c right now under full load.

I'd go until you see some prime95 insability, then back it off a tad to make sure. You're probly not gonna be able to go much over 200 fsb. You could run into chipset and/or memory issues then. I doubt it has an unlocked multi, if it did then you could really see what it could do.

45c isnt bad at all for an Athlon XP, I ran my old 2500+ at 55-60c for years and it still runs today.

300 more mhz for free is good enough for me. I did have to end up running the ram at 333 instead of 400 for stability. The ram that came with this is some cheap off brand but but it worked fine with this 256mb Hynix I added.

Actually, its a Sempron 2400. Anyone else have one of these? I want to compare temps.

Athlon XP = T-Bred AthlonXP, I put a sempron 2400 in my little sister's machine and am getting the same temps

LOL I love the fact that you overclocked by 16.5% and didn't even know it :)
Good chip so far...let's see 2.2ghz :D
