Hi,

My company recently aquired a bunch of IBM x335s. I'm trying to move a 2.8Ghz CPU into another server with the same CPU so making it dual. Some of the servers are dual 2.0 Ghz CPUs so they have the VRM with them. My question is, can I use the VRM from a 2.0 Ghz machine for a 2.8 Ghz CPU? I've got everything all set but didn't want to power up the machine in case the VRM would damage the CPU.

BTW Socket 604

Thanks.

My disclaimer is that I don't really know anything about VRMs.

Do you have any documentation on the VRMs, like a list of supported CPUs, or maximum voltage supplied? I would imagine that a VRM made for a specific socket type CPU would support any CPU designed for that socket, but like I said, I really don't know.

No documentation that I can find, I don't know much about these either so that's where [H] comes in. It looks like this VRM is for the x335 and x336 servers. However I would like to verify that some how before putting this in and finding out I'm incorrect then the CPU and mobo melt down or something crazy like that. The bosses don't like to waste money that way.

It looks like the VRM will work but the model we have is RevB, IBM has indicated that Rev B and earlier had problems which would eventually cause the system to error out a lot. Rev C and later will work with a 2.8Ghz cpu but not mine :( Oh well, looks like I'm sticking with 2.0 Ghz CPUs.

Thanks for your help.
