I am a nework novice. Basic router configuration, wireless, and portforwording are about the extent of my knowledge. I want to be able to VPN into my home network from work, yea I know thats backwards to most people. I also want something better then a NAT for a firewall, something that will mask my open ports, I know this is posible but dont know what does it. I do not want to build a router because I do not want to take the time to learn more linux then I already know and I want something that I can learn so that I can use it in a few of my customers places who need more then a NAT for a firewall.

I want to spend less the $300. What should I be looking for? Would something like this fit my bill?
How about these:

1. Linksys with Gigabit
2. I dont really know anthing about these guys but I hear alot of good stuff about SonicWALL
3. And what is the real difference between that sonicWall and this one?

Oh and I guess this is possible but I need to be able to vpn from a computer with just software not hardware at my work end. That my be a dumb statement but like I said I dont really know how a VPN gets accessed. I am a quick study however ;)

Thanks for the help.

And if any of you have one of these or any that will work for me that is used and for sale hook a brother up!

The Linksys RV0 series are great, I've setup a lot of RV082 and RV016 models...the RV04x series has 1/2 the horsepower of the 082 and 016 units.

They support both IPSec VPN with their own client, which can be touchy at times..just like any other brand IPSec VPN software, and they also have a built in PPTP VPN server...so you can use your native Windows VPN clients. I've setup many of these, I have an RV082 at home myself, rock solid VPN performance....works like a champ.

If you're like to poke around it's web based management...it's here, along with many other Linksys routers....

What I can say about it...rock solid, VERY fast, VERY stable.

As for the firewall...a bit on the more traditional NAT with SPI side by default...but you can get down to some nitty gritty with access rules, inbound and outbound...so you can deny certain traffic. So it's a bit in between.

In my opinion...excellent "bang for the buck".

I've also setup a few Sonicwall routers...they are also solid and stable...however, pricey, and what I don't like...you need to maintain a yearly service contract with them to keep getting firmware updates.

A comparable Sonicwall, speedwise, you'll have a comma in the pricetag.

We use the SonicWall TZ 170s at work for site to site VPN from kiosk back to the mother ship, they do the job just fine and are very simple to set up.

My vote would be for the SonicWALL. They offer great products. The client VPN software is very straightforward as is the setup inside the appliance. I believe they even have "Wizards" that will do the VPN configuration step by step. I am currently running behind a TZ 170 Wireless. The box supports DynDNS if you don't have a static IP at home as well. If you have any other questions about SonicWALL's in general, just ask. The company I work for is medallion partner of SonicWALL. I deal with them on a daily basis.

I have read that the sonciWALL is slow compaired to the linsys. And how well and really how does a hardware virus detector and spyware detector work?

It depends which Sonicwall you're comparing, to which Linksys model.

Yes the Sonicwall TZ150 and 170 are quite a bit slower than the Linksys RV082/016 in throughput. Plus the licensing...you have to consider the licensing. How many PCs behind it, how many Global VPN clients, etc.

Unfortunately their antivirus is McAfee (puke) I haven't found what their anti-spyware partner is.

I have sophous on my PC so McAfee is no real atraction. I dont want to have to pay for licensing. This is for major lowend use. 2-3 computer behind it and only one computer accessing it.

Can you remote desktop through vpn tunnel? I assume I can but never tried it.

Another thing is my torrents. If I am running Azurus my interent is useless. I dont know if this is my Cable modem or my router, but I want this router to be at least able to handle as much as my modem.

SonicWALL has their Network Anti-Virus/Spyware and Gateway Anti-Virus Spyware. I only run the gateway solution. You then don't have a client piece of software o the machine. But both would be ideal. The sonicwall also alows you to enforce the anti-virus on all machines behind it in order to access the internet.

I have had no issues with torret load on my TZ 170.

Remote Desktop is the ideal use over a VPN tunnel.
