volume control method for mp3 polayer connected to stereo

When connecting my MP3 player (or any device for that matter) to my home stereo amp is it better to turn the volume up all the way on the MP3 player and control the level with the amp volume control or vice versa or does it not matter? I've done searches and have found contradicting opinions thanks in advance.
