Voltages are confusing

I don't understand the whole voltages part of overclocking. I understand you do it to give the processor or memory more juice, but how do you know when to do it? How do you know this much is enough or not?

I'm currently at 3.1 Ghz on my C2Duo E6600. I haven't changed any voltages and TAT says my cores are 35-37 degrees C. While playing a game it'll get to 40 degrees. I've only upped the memory frequency and FSB.
 
Basically what I do is:

Increment the FSB. Orthos test.
Increment the FSB. Orthos test.
Increment the FSB. Orthos test.
Increment the FSB. Orthos test.

Then when it fails orthos, increment the voltage, then keep going with the FSB until you need to increment the voltage again.
 
Dude ur temps are great, you can up the voltages a little. Just watch out for the temps and you'll be fine. You should be fine with that overclock. With me that would not suffice, i would try to squeeze the most i can get out of that bitch. I paid xxx for it so i deserve my performance. :) It's only up to you. High voltages can decrease the life of a CPU like 2-3 years. CPUs last like 10 years, so who's gonna fuckin keep a 7 year old CPU? Right? OC THAT BITCH AND UP THE VOLTS!!!!!
 
i have a particular voltage in my mind that i've decided is my tolerance for 24/7 overclock

then i just test and test and test to get every mhz out of a chip or ram at that vcore vmem

memory is a much harrier beast than cpu

i ortho test & memtest for probably 10-15 8-12hour periods before i come to a final overclock

i highly suggest measuring vcore/vmem with a multi-meter right off the motherboard while it's running vs. using cpu-z or whatever because those programs are often very off and usually differ with bios settings.
 
Awesome, thanks for the help guys. Yea, I was having higher temperatures, so I did some wire management, and my fan is now on full blast. That dropped my temperatures around 7 degrees. I'm happy with all of my investments, and this forum helps as well.:)
 
i can't recommend water cooling enough .. i love it and will never go back to air
