VMWare direct path IO - dell cards?

i am researching options for some new Dell servers which will be virtualized using ESXI 5.1.

the R620 with the PERC H710P Integrated RAID Controller, 1GB NV Cache was what i was considering, to have 3 of these servers in a fail over / cluster for IIS servers we need to run.


Does the PERC H710P have support for direct path, Vmware compatibility website seems out of date and only lists the Dell R910 server in the vmware direct path IO search options.

I have a t320 with a 710p, and it shows as passthrough capable. It's in production though, so I can't change it to test.

Should be fine. VMWare's hardware compatibility list sucks. Haven't seen a recent LSI card not work with passthru.

To add to this, someone else brought up an issues, why would i want to use direct path IO and give the guest VM's direct access to the raid card, would that defeat the purpose of the VM and being able to easily move VM's to another server if something happpends hardware wise?

Can't use VMotion with VMDirectPath in use is why many people don't like it. If you don't use or otherwise need VMotion, then VMDirectPath has valid production uses.

Such as? :confused:

I've never, ever, seen DPIO in production, unless it's for a backup server with FC Tape, or for a dedicated DMZ network card of some kind.
