is anyone else having these?

My computer will drop my interet wifi connection, but will keep the "Local connection" sometimes. Other times it just drops the entire connection (putting a little x over the wifi icon).

Now ive tried 2 different routers, 6 different adapters, and even placing the desktop right next to the router, all leading to the same drop in connection. Ive tried looking on the net, and there are a lot of other people with the same problems!

what gives?

i have a linksys wrt54gL with the linksys firmware (tried ddwrt too). i currently have a trendnet adapter that is vista ready in the desktop via pci connection. it always reads 4/5 bars for connection.

once the connection is dropped, the ONLY thing that will allow windows to find wifi is to reboot the PC. running Vista premium 32bit

I've had the same problem since installing Vista. I reboot the wireless router and cable modem in sequence, let the OS find the signal and reconnect...sometimes I have to manually connect to my network. Like you, I have tried various routers, cables and modems to no avail. I am now connected strictly by direct hardwire via router and switch.
 
somehow i dont think the routers are the problem.

yes, they are both up to date.
 
I have been running Vista Premium 32 on my laptop with Intel Pro/wireless 2915ABG for 3 months and havent had any of those issues. I am able to boot up the laptop and never disconnects until I shut it down.
 
which routers have you tried?

my friend, has the exact same issue with his Windows XP laptop..

he has a linksys something router with comcast cable internet..

the wi-fi will connect, thendrop the connection after about 30 minutes and he has to reboot his router/comcast to get it to work again..


not sure his adapter (i think a built in for the dell laptop)..


i never was able to track it down on his machine (granted i only tried for an hour or so)..


if you do track it down let me know, i'm sure my buddy would love to get his working..
 
I've had the same problem occasionaly with my Realtek onboard wifi on my Asus P5W DH. Sometimes I could it to reconnect, sometimes I had to restart the computer.

There have been several wifi updates, tho, and I have not had a problem for awhile.

You say the routers are up to date. Is the firmware/drivers up to date on your adapter?

If you're not sure, check for some updates.
 
Its a linksys GL v1.0. its worked flawlessly up until the vista build.

and, i have a new m1210 that has the intel wifi card in it, Zero problems. so im assuming somethings going on with vista on the desktop.

the other router i have tried is a trendnet, both routers work fine at other houses too.

something is really fishy about all this. i tried a fresh install, updated all drivers the correct way, updated vista, the whole 9, and in the end, same problem.

the 5 adapters ive tried, and the 2 i actually own are all up to date on firmwares. the two trendnet cards that i have are the only two adapters that Vista has "MS drivers" for. ive tried the MS drivers, and the trendnets, same result

have you tried usinga static IP?

i wonder if it is happening when the DHCP address license expiring? (and its failing to re-aquire the license?)

by any chance have you looked into the vista logs to see if any errors popped up?

at first i thought it was vista having a problem with the keys and wpa2. so i went down to wpa, and then wep, same deal. i havent turned my security off, because well, thats just not an option.

my dhcp is set to expire every 24hrs. i checked vista for errors there were none. its just having a hell of a time staying connected. even when i run something like itunes radio, something that pulls usage constantly, itll disconnect eventually.

im just gonna have to say vista is not fully ready driver wise for wifi, damn shame.
 
Another thought here...who is your IP...mine is Time Warner/Roadrunner and all of this actually started when they introduced the 'enhanced package' of higher up/down speeds for an extra $10 a month....maybe just a coincidence ;)

again i really think it has nothing to do with my connection from my IP. all the other computers work non-stop, so i just dont understand how it could have ANYTHING todo with comcrap :)
 
my e1405 does this. Drops the connection for no apparent reason (if I stream music from the server overnight it will *sometimes*, not always) drop the conn. Did it at 3:xx AM the other night. Random) and the only thing that fixes it is to restart. No apparent cause, no unput to cause it.
 
if anyone wants to try to walk me through configuring a WRT54gL with ddwrt23, so that i can use it as a client wirelessly, PM ME.

i basically wanna try making my wrt54gl a wifi card more or less. I know it can be done with the ddwrt23 im running on it now, im just missing something i think.

anyone wanna give it a shot? im on aol, kgeier82


im wondering if this will solve my problem, then ill just hook the desktop up to the ethernet of the GL, and wifi it to the trendnet wifi upstairs that carries the internet connection.
 
how do i know if my wifi card is a ralink card? (or whatever you called it?) vista says its a "realtek b/g wifi pci"

i believe its really a trendnet tew-423pi if i remember right
 
ill give it a go next time it acts up.
