That's disappointing. I have the same model printer.

Have you tried Daemon Tools? It worked good for mounting images in Vista for me.
Haven't tried Daemon yet. I want to run some tests on Counterstrike again and take screenshots for my clan.

Update: Got the drivers for the maxtor controller card finally, so now the boot problem is resolved. I'll let you know if I figure out an alternative driver for the laser printer.

NOTE: Winzip just up and died. Unzipped one file and then ceased working. Downloaded Winrar and it works just fine.

for some reason my dvd will not boot .. it says press any key to boot from the cd or dvd and when i do .. it goes right on loading xp
You probably have a usb keyboard...you might need a PS/2 keyboard to continue ;)

I'm having a big issue right now, can not connect at all to the net using the latest build everything worked fine before, now I can not connect what so ever, anyone have any clues or solutions as to how MS broke this?

Installed Beta 2 just to make sure but it worked fine.

Wow, this is the first Vista that has WORKED for me, out of the box. I must say, I'm very very impressed with this, although all the security BS annoys me. IE7 is awesome as well, I'm tempted to betray Firefox, since IE's tabbed browsing does everything FF does...

Ok so I have a 120gb primary drive with xp sp2 on it and a 250gb that is just a storage drive. I am getting a 320gb soon and I am thinking of putting vista on there just to screw around with it, If I unplug the 120 and set the 320gb on the sata 1 channel and the 250 on the sata 2 channel can I get the files from the 250gb drive with no problem?

Downloading

Now if it will just stop jumping between 100-500 kb/sec I could get done faster.

Where are you downloading from?! I am only getting around 27kbps!

When I received the Beta2 Disk, it said that as soon as the RC1 was released it would ship automatically. If I'm not mistaken, you can run the RC1 on 3 test machines off of the same PID number which would be ultra cool. That would tide me over until the official release and shake the bugs out of the Gold issue.

The $10 "thingie" was an offer from MS to get both versions (32/64 bit) of Vista Beta 2 on disk.
It's over now and no longer available.

I'm pretty sure that those who took advantage of this initial offer also get RC1 sent along when it's released.
I hope.

Im using the download manager off there sites and it dipps down into the 80's and then it will sit at ~150 then is will jump as high as 400 something is a little weird but what can a person do.

Edit: Im now getting between 800 KBS and 1mps

What the F !?!?! thats rediculous...
Agreed...what the hell? A gig of memory nearly idle!!?? I'm really hoping that either a.)the memory usage goes way down for the final build or b.)the price of hardware plummets to the ground...

posting from my Vista PC now:

According to Task Manager, I am using 66% of my physical memory. That is not idle, since I have tow IE tabs going (TM says private working memory for that is ~60MB) and Windows Live Desktop Mail (70MB of private working memory) going. From the "performance" tab:
Code:
Physical Memory
Total 1022
Cached 474
Free 0

I think I will have a pretty hard time transitioning between XP and this. I dislike all the weird popups and as a long-time winXP user, I am not pleased with the changes to the menu bar, such as the relocation of the fwd/ back buttons, the lack of an "up" button and generally the confusion about the location bar. I must say that I will surely get used to it and am certainly a change resistant user (otherwise I'd be running linux!),

On my A64 1800+ with a GB of RAM and a 6600 it behaves reasonably well, not really fast, but sluggish only in a few instances.

ps.: first impression of vista.

That was a great brief first impression. Would it be okay if I quoted you on that in something I am working on regarding an evaluation of Vista?

I'd suggest you get familiar with using 'Search', because under Vista it's a great tool which can eliminate almost all of the folder navigation annoyances. The lack of that 'Up' button isn't really annoying at all when you get to the point where typing a few characters into Search spits up anything you want to find.

But does IE7 have all those sexy extensions? :)

I popped my Vista cherry with this release. I decided to test it out on an old laptop that I have a spare hard disk for.

The spare HD had a fresh installation of XP SP2 on it, so I thought I'd try doing an upgrade. Very impressed with how smoothly it all went, and it took about an hour which isn't bad for a 3 year old laptop.

Before I installed it, the Vista upgrade advisor had warned about some incompatabilities and unsupported devices, but when I booted up Vista, all I needed to upgrade was the Geforce go driver, which it did automatically. It seemed to already have drivers for everything else (just using the XP ones perhaps?) Again very impressed.

Only noticed a couple of small problems really... I wasn't able to scroll with the touchpad, was probably the biggest one. Installed a couple of old games and they worked great.

Also surprised at how slick and responsive it is, even on an old 2.6 GHz P4 with 512MB. It's beautiful. I wasn't in any hurry to upgrade from XP before, but now I'm really tempted.

I understand your point. As I had mentioned, my reluctance w.r.t. change is what makes me miss it. I guess that I could get used to the search feature, but consider this: Windows navigation is (and used to be) mostly mouse based. Given that, when I am browsing my folders, I have my right hand on the mouse to point, click etc. If I do not have the "up" arrow and use search instead, I have to disengage the mouse, type a part of my search phrase and re-engage. Certainly not conventient.

I believe that there is an alternative to the "up" button that is integrated with the location bar (where is would say "c:\ program files \ whatever..." which allows for quick changing of the currently viewed folder.

I am also missing the lack of "tools" menu to quickly change my folder settings. I guess there are a lot of things to get used to/ find in Vista and since I am not going to be using it on a daily basis - my production machine is on XP for many reasons-, it'll be a while before I am comfortable with it.

i tried using my Beta 2 Key but it doesnt work. says it cant validate it. :(
that is because you get invited to use pre-RC1. I received an e-mail as one of the "select" people that they'd like to give Vista a spin.

edit: all I can say is that I got an e-mail with a key. After double checking (now) I see that it's the same key i used for beta 2. sorry for any confusion/ my lack of fact checking.

So why was the link even posted if only the people who got the email can use it?

I'm wondering that now too. I have a Beta 2 key and was under the impression that would work for this. I didn't have to register for this new build, so I'm thinking I'm not going to get a new key.

Beta 2 key works... At least it did for me..
So far it has been much better experience than it was with beta 2..
Just don't install any video card drivers untill nvidia or ati has updated them...

That's what I thought. I might have to install this new version then and "give it a go", as the Brits say.

hmmm, I'm using 5552 right now....
I just activated it, using beta2 key. i think this build is older than 5536 even though the build number is higher if i'm not mistaken....

I like this beta even better already because X-fi Vista drivers installed and worked without a hitch, it was a disaster to even istall them on RC2

My Beta 2 key activated just fine with this new build.

When I tried Beta 2, I couldn't get the X-fi drivers to work at all, it actually crashed my system. I didn't get the invite but I did install Pre-RC1 with my Beta 2 keys. No problem.

I am triple booting at this moment between Windows XP Pro, Windows XP Pro 64-bit and Windows Vista. No problems at all! I can play WoW fine. If Pre-RC1 is an indication of Vista getting better from now till retail. I will definately purchase the Ultimate Edition on the first day it's released.

By the way, does anyone know what is the highest number you can get on that Windows Experience Index thingy? I got an overall score of 4.9 out of ??

Probably hardware that has not come out yet, but will be available when people start upgrading to Vista (DX 10 video cards, quad core CPUs, ect)
