Vista hangs sometimes(?)

My main system specs are in the sig.

What I do have are 2 WD6400AAKS HDD with TONS of movies and tv shows on there. I use shark007's codec pack, http://shark007.net/, for a while now and haven't seen problems really except this...

From time to time, and this doesn't happen every time, I would play a movie and the file would chug, the audio and video would stop, but the computer is still running fine for everything else, the audio would start up and the video would play catch up to the audio. After that the video would continue playing.

This happens from time to time, but never in the same place twice. I turned off the indexing option, anti-virus is off, reinstalled the codec pack and even tried other codecs to the same result. Does anyone else have any sort of similar experience to this?

- How old is this current install of Vista?
- How long has this problem occurring for?
- Are you using some sort of RAID setup with those two drives?
- Have you run an AV and anti-malware scans?

I'd say update your video card drivers... If it's just playback that hangs, your video card is doing some of the decoding work too.. Is this HD or SD content?

Vista install is only about 3 months old, don't do anything on it except videos, video games and... thats it. I do all my work on my MBP.

This problem kinda just surfaced a month ago.

No raid set up, just straight to the sata ports on the board.

The AV is turned off when I tried this bad boy out.

And my drivers are all up to date... this is bizarre... and the files are SD.

I was doing some high def video playback in MKV and MP4 formats and the weird stuttering never happens. Could this be a codec issue?

Possibly.

But first do anti-virus (Avira Free is a good a choice if you don't already have one) eand malware scan (Spybot Search and Destroy, Super Anti-Spyware, Malwarebytes) to make sure that the system is clean.

Also use VLC as well as Media Player Classic to play back those movie files to see if the hitches still occur. Speaking of which: what app are you using to watch those movie files? the MKV and Mp4 files?

I'm going to try the malware and antivirus scans tonight to see what comes up. And the all the files play in WMP... but I'll try it in VLC to see.

Also, I can hear the HDD play around when the video finally catches up. Is there anything that is free that does thorough scans of HDD for integrity? I haven't done this in a while...

Download the CD image of Hitachi Drive Fitness Test, burn the ISO file to a CD, and then boot from it, just like you would do with the XP/Vista install CD. Test the hard drive and see if any problems are found. DFT will run on most manufacturers' hard drives. Alternatively, you can use Seagate's SeaTools for DOS to test a Seagate or Maxtor drive. For a Western Digital drive, you could use Data Lifeguard Tools for DOS to test a Western Digital drive.

Okay

1/ Tried all the HDD tests, everything is good.
2/ Tried all scanning softwares, everything is good
3/ Tuned up and down the Nvidia video fine tuning control things (didn't do anything)

I think there are 3 things I have left to try

1/ Intel Matrix Manager (?)
2/ Re-install codec pack (try new ones)
3/ Re-install Vista (last resort)

I mean the video skipping doesn't bother me too much now that I know it's not really a hardware problem... AHHH....

i had tons of issues (video tearing, audio synching, lock ups and bsods) using ffdshow with hd content on my machine (in sig), so its possibly an issue with ffdshow, 64 bit vista and hd playback.. i started using coreavc and haven't had any problems since.

I'm not 100% sure ffdshow was my problem but going on 4+ months without issue now running core avc, i also coincidentally am running a similar set up with 2 640gb aaks's drives not raided and tons of video playback, only difference, i was using cccp codec (Combined Community Codec Pack).

hmm I never considered that as a problem. Let me see if there are things I could do to avoid using ffdshow.

Well, the video stutter happened while using VLC for a movie, I think it has something to do with my raptor, cause I hear that bad boy going nuts when it chugs.

Now the question, is that even possible? The movies are on another HDD, and the programs are on the raptor.
