Hi there,

I'm planning to build a new computer end of this year or very early next year. I want to take advantage of 4GIG or more of ram plus DX10. I was wondering if Vista 64Bit is a wise choice?

I've read that Vista has issues with OpenGL support. Is this a driver problem with ATI/Nvidia or an issue with the OS? Will Vista 64Bit play old games like stuff based on Half Life 1's engine (GoldSrc)?

I cannot speak on older games but I have been using Vista 64 for more than a year now and it has been fine for me.

I use Vista 64 bit and it has caused a little headache but after all the updates and some minor trouble shooting it works well enough for me. A year ago it was nothing but a PIA but with SP1 and all the collective hardware companies working together it is now a relatively stable piece of software IMO.

Concur

I will say I have had 1 problem that occured on both of my machines and I haven't been able to figure it out except for a re-install. It is possible a patch fixed it.

At random times, on both of my machines IE stopped working. It was almost like I had a virus but I highly doubt it. I just couldn't open IE and some other applications. After a few hours trying to figure it out I said f-it and did a re-install. It only happened twice and hasn't happened again.

Im using beta builds of Windows 7. Definitely wait for 7. Its alot faster than Vista.

I also get hardlocks and CMDLcache crashes to the desktop playing HL2:E2, dunno whats up with it. Its the only game i've tried playing since installing Vista 64. Annoying as hell and didn't have this issue with XP Pro 32bit.

I've tried many autoexec.cfg settings for preload and mem_heapsize crap, nothing working yet.

64-bit Vista is perfectly fine for new and most older games. Some older games may need a fix or some kind of workaround, but in general they should work. You can always set up a dual-boot config with Vista/XP if you have issues.

I just got done playing Deus Ex again with the Direct3D renderer and I only experienced one CTD and one lockup, which isn't too bad.

So no one knows for sure if older games based on Half Life 1 engine will run properly using openGL? I'm talking about CS 1.6, Sven Coop, stuff based on the Goldsrc engine.

I would dual boot with XP Pro 32bit but that's only if I have to. I would rather stay with one OS and perfect it if it is capable at this point in time.

i'd dual boot 32 xp just to play some oldies but goldies

quake 2 anyone?

first i've ever heard about openGL not working in Vista64 (i haven't had any problem with OGL and Vista).. if anything this would be an issue with Nvidia/ATI drivers and not Vista..

as far as older games, from what i gather you only have to worry about 16bit games.. 16bit compatability has been removed..

How's that even possible?

AFAIK, Half Life 2 has been playable on Vista x64 since the RTM.

Sure as hell aint mine, try to load it from Steam and it goes to the loading screen without the Valve logo video and just sits their until I do a CTRL ALT DEL and Task manager says HL2 not responding. Only way to get out of it is to do a power cycle.

OpenGL should work fine now, but there were some support issues early on with Vista. Some games like Quake 4 would not run. HL most likely will work with OpenGL, but being an older game it might have problems.

So when will windows 7 hit the general public?

He's going to be running a pirated version, or a developer who was at PDC, or works for MS....why do I think the first?

Saying wait for Win7 is like saying "wait until the next videocard comes out! Rumors are next month!" over and over. Lord KNOWS when Win7 will be released, even in open beta form (will there be an open beta?)

OP go 64 bit you wont regret it. Vista once tweaked is more stable then XP and just as fast. I have only 1 program that doesnt work with vista 64 damn you FLASHPAQ and your no 64bit version!

I am running vista x64. I have no compatibilty issues with any hardware or software. I notice when unraring large files is quite a bit faster in x64 as well. More stable too.

I am also running Windows 7 and it's no faster for me. That's not to say it isn't fast. But Vista is also very fast on my computer. I think were windows 7 shines is on computers with less ram. I have 6gb so it's not and issue for me.

No issues with OpenGL.

Well after massive modifying and massive amounts of crashing (easily 20+ crashes) in the 4-5hrs of playing HL2:EP2 I finished it, not all in one setting, so now I'll have to move onto another game and see how it works in my Vista 64bit, Vista was the only thing to change from my system and XP Pro 32bit when playing HL2:EP2, so dunno how viable stability is in Vista yet or the HL2 engine its self!

First of all, an OS with 64 Bit is a wise choice for you, given your future 4 GBs (or more) of RAM.
Second, Vista is, in my experience, far more stable (and faster, especially after SP1) than any other Windows I've used in the past. I've had no issues with OpenGL games, such as Doom 3 and Prey, so don't know anything about Vista having problems with Open GL. And yes, some problems may be driver related and not Vista specific. As far as HL1 goes, I never installed it in my Vista rig, so I can't answer that.

All in all, I would recommend you to install Vista 64, without much thought. It's indeed a wise choice, whether you look at it from a "Stable OS" and/or "Gamer" perspective.

The biggest problem I had with Vista was it nuked my SB, and I was forced to use onboard sound which sucks maximum ass. I went back to XP until I can afford the sound card I want.

Vista x64 is the only OS that supports 4Gb+ memory and DX10

Its just as well supported as any other OS, maybe more so now. OpenGL certainly works now, there was some teething problems initially but that was over a year ago now...come to think of it Vista was RTM around the end of Nov so I've been using it about 2 years now

How time flys...

I was as harsh on Vista 64 as anyone could be but post SP1 it's a whole new animal and I'm very happy with it now. :)

I love when people give generalized statements such as this.

How did Vista "nuke" your SB?

I think he means that Creative didn't support the SB cards under Vista, that's creatives fault not Microsofts.

The beta for Vista was about for well over a year before it was RTM and a further 3 months before it went public, this is plenty of time for creative to test their products and re-write the drivers, the fact they didn't means they have no one else to blame but themselves.

I am having the same issue. It is a problem with the nVidia drivers for the 64 bit version of HL2. If you add the "-32bit" command to the launcher, it should work fine, but none of the save games are compatible between 32 and 64 bit versions.

My soundblaster card has always worked fine in vista. Even back in beta.

Wheres that in steam?
