Virtualizing Windows Install without Admin - VMWare Fusion

Howdy, I'm trying to set up my work laptop (it's a piece of garbage) as a Virtual Machine on my mac-pro for when I'm working from home. I have no admin on the laptop, so I'm considering removing the hard drive, hooking it up to the mac and trying to create the VM from an existing drive.

My question is, with VMWare Fusion, are you able to create and set up a Virtual Machine without admin on the source OS?

I've talked with my IT dept and while not expressly forbidding the process, they won't assist by granting me admin privileges or installing the VMWare Migration Assistant.

Let me know what you guys think!

man for this, I would honestly just use bartpe on your laptop and grant your self admin priveleges to install the software. Once your done, change back your account type.

It is possible to adjust privileges with BartPE and return it to normal afterwards?

Will this have any negative affect on my machine, or leave any traces of what I've done should IT get curious? While they don't mind so much that I intend to create an image of the drive, they would be quite terse with my separation if I gave myself admin and don't revert it back to previous permissions once I'm finished.

although youll need to be an admin to install the converter app, no? and then once converted, youll need admin privs to install the new video, nic, sound, etc drivers and if you want, uninstall the old drivers from the OS.

No, for Converter you can use the boot cd. But you will need admin privileges to install VMware Tools.

You can try the Ophcrack live cd to try to crack the admin password if you must, but this mostly depends on your IT department not having the proper group policy settings in place to prevent using lanman hashes to store the account password.

Is it possible to do as Roliath suggested and simply change the local account to admin temporarily (once I've created the VMachine), install VMTools then revert back to limited?

I'm not really interested in cracking the password, though I wouldn't mind wiping the admin password and resetting it on the VMachine once it's been converted in order to get VMTools installed.

My adapter will be here tomorrow, so it's going to be a fun experiment. Either way I'll post results in case anyone else ever looks to accomplish this.

The only requirement is to have admin rights in order to install VMware tools. Once installed, you don't need admin rights. If you need to update VMware tools in the future though, you'll need to jump through the same hoops.

So long as it's possible to do, I don't mind having to do it any time I've got install something.

Thanks for all the input!
