videocard recommendation

I have a P4 system ive been using for quite a few years now,but just recently the videocard fan became pretty noisy. Shortly after I noticed that, the system hangs and crashed when running intensive apps or just having too many browser tabs open. I took the card out and tried cleaning the fan but that didnt help. It still spins but pretty slowly. Its a CELESTICA RADEON 9600XT - 128MB.

Im thinking an upgrade is in order, but something cheap ( doesnt have to be the newest and greatest) that runs reliably on this system. Any ideas on what would run this system well but not be too much for the mobo to handle? I dont want to create too much of a bottleneck by having a far too advanced videocard on an old system.

Current sys specs are:

ASUS P4C800-E DELUXE MOTHERBOARD
INTEL PENTIUM 4 EE 3.2GHZ 800MHZ FSB
2 GB CORSAIR 512MB DDR PC3200LL XMS
CELESTICA RADEON 9600XT 128MB

1) What video resolution do you run?
2) What power supply do you have (wattage and brand)?
3) What type of graphics adapter slot do you have (agp, pcie 1.0, pcie 2.0)?

Then we can give you some advice on what to get?
Also have you stepped up to Win 7 yet or are you still on XP?
 
currently running xp (but looking at upgrading to 7 within a few months) @ 1280x1024, but lcd maxes out @ 1680x1050. psu is 420w, AGP slot. trying to keep it below $100.
 
Which 420W PSU?

Best bet would to find a used X800 based video card or so.
 
first off, what do you use your PC for?
second, whats your budget
third, dont expect any dramatic improvement over the perormance youll get with a new GFX card purchase cuz tha fastest AGP x8 card is proabably the 4670 which in my opinion wouldnt be worth the performance upgrade your getting...

sorry to say this but you need a total re haul of your system :(
 
I'd suggest any of Nividia's 6600-to-6800GT or ATI's x1600pro-to-HD4650 video cards.

I skip the x800xt because of its lack of SM3.0 support.

I picked up a used 6800GT for $30 shipped. Runs games like L4D2, MW2, and Mass Effect fine at meduim settings 1280x720 on an old Dell P4 3.0 Ghz
