Hello Folks,

In general, when video output stutters, is it the quality of video card (integrated)? or is it the CPU power (single core AMD)? Or is it low RAM issues (2GB)?

If low quality video card is the issue, would something like this work for a very basic system, which needs a low profile video card?: http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0317111

what operating system,this could well be a software issue
 
i dont know man. thats a single core cpu and a really ancient chipset. but it should be able to play vid without stuttering. hi def, thats another story.
 
Mostly CPU, if we're talking about high definition (720p or higher) h264 and the like. Some video players allow hardware acceleration, but they can be picky about the files they work on, so I like having enough cpu oomph to handle 1080p all by itself. My old 3800x2 @ 2.4 ghz for example can easily handle 720p, but struggles with some 1080p content without hardware acceleration enabled. If you can get dxva acceleration to work (you'll need a newer video card than your integrated chipset, I'm pretty sure) then the cpu is almost irrelevant, you might see it use up 5% in task manager while the gpu does all the hard work.

The easiest way is to use MPC-HC with the evr-cust preset renderer, if I recall it defaults to this. There may be some other settings that need to be changed before it works properly, but all that information is available with some extra reading via google. That card should work fine for video acceleration, but it probably won't do anything with AVI's, it may help with some streaming videos as flash supports hardware acceleration. Standard definition avi's really should play fine on that machine, they're not high stress, try MPC-HC, even if it doesn't have hardware accel for avi files, it is very cpu efficient so it should help.

Thanks for the info on MPC-HC. I've got it on now. It is, as both of you said, much more CPU friendly, more than the GOM Player, which I've accustomed to.

You know what's really funny? The 6150SE chipset is still being made on modern (2010) mobos. I can't believe that thing has lasted this long, I remember it back in early 2005. :rolleyes:

Oh, and +1 to MPC-HC, it is far more robust than VLC, especially at higher resolutions and allows for some hardware decoding with certain codecs.

I'd go for the AMD card as they tend to have far better decoding, but for 720p videos, either will be just fine.

I guess that sums it up for emachines and those poor soles, like myself, who don't know enough about these stuffs before they bite the cheap offer.

That 4350 you linked would work just fine. I have an onboard 4200 in my HTPC and it works great decoding 1080p h.264 video without stuttering.

The HD4000 and HD5000 series cards from AMD are very good at decoding, and this is coming from an NVIDIA fanboi ;)
 
His CPU can do 720p H.264 w/o DXVA. My old Opteron 165 @ 2.7GHz could do 1080p H.264 pretty well back in 2006 without any hardware assist and with the far less optimized (and single threaded) decoders at the time.

Would this pic, which is of my mobo, confirm the PCI_e slot mentioned in the spec sheet above? There are only tow slots on the board, and I suspect the larger one is the PCIe, not sure about the small one though.
 
Those are both PCI-E... the small one is x1 and the large one is x16. You can even see them labeled in your pic clearly PCI-Ex16 (under it) and PCI-Ex1 (to the right)

Oh, my goodness. What do I know? Thanks. So close yet so far away.

Now the spec for the Radeon HD 4350 says: "PCI Express 2.0 x16 Interface".

Can I assume my mobo also has it? I really don't know as the spec sheet didn't specify it -- as far as I can understand.
