Concerning GTX 460 768 mb
Well I was doing nothing except reading a web page and suddenly lost video signal, the yellow standby light goes on. So i re-seated the card but no go. The monitor is working - thankfully a spare GTS 8800 320mb allowed me to reboot to Windows. So now I want to try to repeat what happened. But I'm confused about driver issues concerning this unplanned swap. I let Windows load some kind of default driver, and now I'm prompted to restart computer, which I did now allowing me the full resolution - good. But what happens to the driver than ran off my suspected dead card? I'm a little concerned about software corruption as I swap in my suspected dead card to test it. Any advice on this type of situation would be greatly appreciated.
Edit
I found that the currently installed driver is now 285.62 but not sure if that is what was installed before my issue.

Edit
Well I'm okay for now. Stupid me, not paying attention, reseated the card on the motherboard video port but with a card in the PCI slot I got no picture.. When I tried my old 8800 gts in the PCI slot it worked fine. And when I again tried to seat my gtx460, it worked for some reason. Have no idea what could have caused loss of signal. But it's working for now.

Researched swapping cards is not a problem software wise, but I wonder what could have caused the failure. I was watching a video when it happened. Maybe dust got in there somehow?

Maybe, but they seemed fine. I was dusting out the case earlier this morning with a can of air that's why I was thinking that it could have been dust. But had the computer on and case covered when picture was suddenly lost and the standby light came on.

Random fluke probably. Really wouldn't worry unless it's a recurring issue.
