This is on an older desktop and has been happening since I've had the system. Screen will freeze for about 6 seconds, cursor can move but mouse/keyboard can't click/activate anything. After that 6 seconds, the monitor goes black. However, everything else becomes functional again. For example, if audio/video was playing, you can still hear it. And you can shut down or restart the computer if you know the keystrokes. But the screen will remain black until you restart.
It can go for days without happening or it can happen 4 times in a few hours. For some reason, youtube seems to make it happen faster than anything. Hard to watch more than a few of them. But watching mpeg or avi files from the hard drive doesn't seem to provoke it. I've used numerous browsers and flash updates so it's not that. Also, it can happen when doing nothing, even with no browser running.
Could it be a driver problem? Is it necessary to delete the old driver first? Do you need to use a sweeper program? Also, on AMD's site it lists 3 drivers:
a "catalyst driver for ... 4000, 3000, & 2000 series"
a "catalyst display driver for win XP"
a "catalyst legacy display driver for win XP"
Win XP Pro
