Video card not connected?

When I restart it won’t load windows. Depending on 'its' mood it will got to a black screen that says, "No cable connected to the video card, see 'getting started' manual". Other times it will go to the screen where I have to select if I want to boot in safe mode with or w/o networking, or regular windows. Other times it will say "Over clocking failed" then something about the BIOS.

This just started a few weeks ago... I think about the time I download an updated driver for my gfx card (ATI RADION X800); however, sense then I put in an older driver... it didn't fix the problem.

If I want to boot windows, I generally have to restart it a few times for it to work. Then when it does work and windows is loaded the "found new hardware wizard" pops up.

My computer is not over clocked and the cables are connected correctly.

Did you use the ATI "uninstall" utility to completely remove the older driver before you installed the new one ? (and uninstall and reboot before you reverted back to the old one ?)

If your card has video in or video out there is a second driver you need to install, the WDM driver. You will find it just below the main driver package (which has "ccc" in the file name). The WDM driver has "wdm" in the file name.

I am not an expert on video cards but (I have a machine with the same type card, an AGP version of the X800) the newer ATI drivers do little or nothing for that card that I can see and I am running cat version 7.2 without issues. Unless you are having an issue with a game I would ignore new cat releases unless the notes say something specific to your card has been fixed. The are just getting bigger and more bloated as they add fancy stuff for the newer generation of cards that will not do anything for yours. You might want to double check me with a post in the ATI video card section.

I recommend,

Download CAT 7.2 or 7.3 or 7.4 both the driver and control panel file ( "xxxx_ccc_yyy.zzz") and the WDM file right under it (xxxx_wdm_yyy.zzz)

1) Download and install "Driver Cleaner" there is a free copy and once installed there is a menu item called "ATI" that will search your system and remove all ATI related software. (dont run it yet).

2) use the Control Panel's "Add/Remove Software" and run the ATI software uninstall utility.

3) reboot. (your screen resolution may change and things are bigger but ignore it for now) cancel any "found new hardware" that pop up.

4) run driver cleaner selecting "ATI" from the menu.

5) reboot cancel any "found new hardware" that pop up.

6) run driver cleaner again just to be sure.

7) reboot cancel any "found new hardware" that pop up.

8) run the downloaded driver file, dont cancel anything that pops up and be patient, it takes a bit and some screens are hidden behind others so it looks like nothing is happening for a while. (annoying as heck, wish they would fix that. )

9) reboot - cancel any "found new hardware" that pop up.

10) fix your screen resolution by right clicking the desktop and going to advanced.

11) run the wdm downloaded file. same as above but its much much faster. Only should take a few seconds.

12) reboot (you should NOT get any "found new hardware" )

13) go into hardware manager and check your video card driver status (it is normal to have 2 entries for a single card) and you should also have an ATI entry under "sound video and game controllers (if you card has video in/out) .
