I'm thinking of going from my dual 17" screen at 1280x1024 to a single screen at 1920x1200. Currently I've got a 6600GT and it handles my gaming needs just fine.

However, I think I'm gonna need something a little beefier for 1920x1200. What card would give me roughly the same performance as the 6600GT does at 1280x1024?

really depends on your iq setting at 1920x and what games you play for it. playing fps games online with that res is almost impossilble for me. imo AA is a mute point and you probably will have many stuttering or dips along the way. to me that is unacceptable unless it was single player game.

At 2048x1536, you don't need AA. Try going for that resolution.
and please tell me how the hell I'm going to do that on with a LCD that has native resolution of 1920x1200?

By getting a monitor that supports it.

But, if you REALLY want to get that LCD (I only mentioned the higher resolution because you didnt get the new monitor yet), then the 6800GT/X800XT would be the best solution for it.

The 6600 may be able to output at that res but it does not mean that it will be a great experience as well, expect it to be a bumpy ride.

Yes, I'm aware of this - that's why I made this thread.

All of the benchmarks I've seen go up to 1600x1200, though it looks like you should still go with something in the range of 6800GT or X800XT (they're pretty close in performance, with the x800xt ahead in D3D.) What games do you want to play exactly?

Halo, HL2, FarCry are what I'd be most concerned about

Then the x800xt is what you should aim for, since it has the fill rate power you need.

Oop I'm sorry, must of glanced over that part. In that case a GT/Ultra or XT/PE would suit you real well. The choice is all in the games you play.

Funny, my ATI Mobile 9600 works fine on my laptop @ 1920x1200 natively, and I can even play Far Cry and Doom 3 on it :)

I guarantee you can't play them @ 1920x1200 though. Your talking about a GPU that gets, at best, a score of about 1000 in 3dmark 05 at 1024x768. You can play those games but it's impossible for that VPU to play them at 1920x1200 at a reasonable frame rate.

better start up a SLi Rig if you want to play at those res

My 6800GT does 2048x1536, and does it beautifully....

I bitched and moaned about new graphics for vice city, then I discovered my old refurb IBM p200 monitor does 2048x1536....Vice City never looked so good! (I've been playingit a lot lately waiting for San Andreas)

Those resolutions are hellish for a desktop though, at least for me personally.

I can do 1735*1440 (or whatever that res is) and quake III runs just fine on my 9500Pro.

1792 x 1344?

Anyway, Quake III isn't the newest game on the market lol. . .

Most likely the Dell, since it should be the least expensive.
