Vid card built like MB

I was wondering if there will ever be video cards like mother boards? I think it would be great to be able to change gpu and memory..new chip comes out, get it and re use your 1 gig of ddr 5 ..Upgrade to 2 gigs ddr 5 later stuff like that..

the manufacturers would not be able to introduce cheaper cooler lower powered components, cut costs, no change in memory controller and I/O

Yep, standardization is one of those things that looks good on paper but, doesn't work in application.

Some people use to do this with some of the (8 series?) cards. They would remove the GPU from one model and place it onto another model.

Last time i had to use a vidcard like that was when you had to put two 512k memory chips to turn your vga card into svga.
Yup waaaaaaaaaaaay back. I was a lil' kid and it was totally worth it... think it was a trident card...

And well it wouldnt work because gpu tech moves way faster than MB tech, and thus the quality of the required interconnects is heaven to earth different. (Ohh and the width of said interconnects and the distance to the gpu to diminish the latency and well, let's just say that it is more complicated tech wise in general and you wouldnt be able to achieve the same quality/speed all around)

@OP: APUs are certainly a step in this direction and hopefully the technology will only continue to improve.

Not for GDDR5, at least for AMD. GDDR5 already (reportedly) has strict trace routing requirements, and the high clocks AMD's are stock clocked at are not likely to allow for this.

Nvidia wanted to use MxM for notebooks, don't think it ever took off.

It isnt like this at all, mxm is just kinda like making standard desktop graphic cards for the mobile market, each card has its gpu and memory so yeah, not quite like the OP's idea.

They do, only they paired them and made it nice and simple, - they put it all on one modular standards based card that you can swap out for a faster one at a moments notice.
