VGA Powersupply

The only downside to those units is the price.

If you shop around, you can find the Corsair 750 for around $99.99 and $79-$89 after MIR.

And if you use MS cash back, you can get that total under $70 when all said and done.
 
I would have killed for one of these back in the day when I was using peliters for cooling. A power supply that generated this kind of power @ 12v was unheard of for less than 150 bucks back then.
 
The PCP&C 610W EPS unit is also around $99 and it's about as good as they come quality-wise. It has one six-pin connector and a second 6/8-pin connector. It's a little longer than the average PSU of its power level, so it might be a bit tight in a small or loaded case. That's the only down side I could think of.

I've never been a gammer so I've had very little interest in GPU VGA graphic cards That was before "CUDA" and their ability to fold. Before that I thought "CUDA" was a fish (barracuda or until this year the GOP VP nomination :rolleyes:).

I use my computers, IMO, as a worthwhile hobby, an unbelieveable window to the world (the Internet), to burn an occasional CD or DVD ( I have DVD writers on all my machines and before that it was CD writers I had an individual show me how to copy DVD movies many years ago), to listen to some music (I have a hearing problem so I use headphones), to email, to post to this and other forums, to IM my sister in Conn.( because it's much cheaper than a telephone call) and all the wonderful things that IT has brought us :p Oh yeah, I use it to spend what little bit of money I have with online shopping and a deflated bank account :D

I've probably built 50+ boxen (I know it's not many, but I've lost count, it's not really important and it's really no ones business but mine ;)), from the good ole' slot procs to the ever popular skt 775 and I'm looking closely at the new i7 chip (Nehalm) with the 1366 skt (skt 1160 :confused:). I just can't afford DDR3 RAM ATM. (skt 939, skt A, skt 478, skt 7, slot procs, etc) I just got a OCZ Game Stream 700W PSU and it is suppose to come today. (that's if the UPS horse doesn't break it's leg :() Now I read about PSU's just for the VGA card :eek: I hope this is for people with under powered PSU's or with more than 3 or 4 GPU cards. I just don't want to add anymore possible problems to my computers :(.

You are correct, these types of products are for people with inferior PSUs. However, in any case it's generally still much more cost-effective to purchase a better main PSU altogether instead of bothering with one of these things. Plus, I wouldn't trust their quality compared to a real well-built PSU.
 
When I replace a smaller power supply with a larger one I use the smaller power supplies for Video Card Power Supplies by opening the power supply and cutting out all the cables except the video connector cables and trace back the 2 wires to inside the power supply from the main motherboard connector and solder them together and finish off the loop with heat shrink tubbing.
Then I can just use the power switch on the back of the supply to turn power on and off to the Video Card cables.
I follow these 2 wires that are shown in the picture back into the power supply and be sure to cut these 2 wires long to add tubbing and solder them together.
Works great. Make your own dedicated Video Card Power Supply from what ever power supply you want.
