VelociRaptors keep grinding under idle

Hi guys,

It's happening at very moment I'm typing this, I can't stand it. I have 2x VelociRaptor 600GB in software RAID0 on Intel P67 controller, using Asus P8P67 Deluxe, and the disks just keep making grinding noises as if they were under full load even though they should be idling, it happens everywhere (BIOS, POST, bootup, OS), but stops once actually something is being R/W from them! It almost seems as if the firmware on the drives is doing something when disks should be idle. I experienced similar problems when one of my 1TB seagates was dying where it would appear as if it was doing heavy R/W for no apparent reason at same time being very unresponsive, but here drives are working ok and are speedy. Any ideas?

I thought my hard drive was doing this. Turns out it was a fan going bad. Sounded EXACTLY like head seeking.

I'm 100% positive it is the drives, I can feel with my fingers and clearly hear them.

update: after disabling raid in UEFI settings, and running some tests, raid0 corrupted itself. S.M.A.R.T. readouts looked ok, but you can't trust them, after running basic tests under linux using smartctl and in Win7 using WD's LifeGuard Diagnostics, both drives bomb out within 5 seconds with errors. Doing RMA, damn it sigh. At least 1.1TB of data is still there after recreating identical 128kb stripe raid0 and reviving lost partitions using testdisk.

I have seen drives do this to try to recover unreadable sectors. Look carefully at the raw values for Current_Pending_Sector and Offline_Uncorrectable in the SMART data. If either of these have a raw value that is not 0 the drive could be recovering.

I'd consider buying new disks and selling the refurbs they're going to send you. Go look up reviews of refurb HDs on any site that sells them - pretty much all garbage. Which is why I always said HD warranty means nothing, because why would you want to use a refurb drive?

At work I have 40+ drives (yes I know way too small to be scientific) that were back from an RMA in use in my raid servers. Although some of them this is the 2nd or 3rd RMA.
