Vega Rumors

I certainly do -- that noisy stock cooler just isn't cutting it, and I'm not interested in water cooling. An extra $20-40 is chump change for some peace of mind.

I'm also absolutely sure that I'm not the only person that feels this way, either.

Agreed- Nvidia's blowers are occasionally well-behaved, but AMD just hasn't put that much thought into their own.

AIB cards with good case airflow always perform better, closed-loop units (which are thankfully available for Vega) are the best out-of-box performance, and good custom loop setups are going to give best performance quieter.

Yes but think about it. That price premium is probably not worth the profit for the re sellers. If the price it too much then they are stepping on their own toes for the gtx 1080s so they are damned if you do situation and they can live without doing it. I think it makes no financial sense for them for now.

To be honest, in the context of computer parts shopping, I don't care about whatever situation AMD is in, and I don't care about whatever the AIBs and AMD are doing. If there isn't product available that matches my needs, I won't buy it.

There's a reason why so many turn to AIBs for both AMD and NVIDIA -- both their stock coolers don't get the job done for non-watercooling types.

If AMD is passing up that market this holiday season, I know where my dollars would be going, and it's either to Green Team, or waiting for some time in 2018.

Again, I'm absolutely certain that I'm not alone with this perspective.

The only reason why I'd even remotely consider AMD at this stage is because of the ready availability of FreeSync vs the hefty premium of G-Sync (getting to be quite prohibitive, in many cases, for monitors/TVs over, say, 32", and at resolutions over 1440p).

With AIB Vega cards, AMD has a chance to tap into that monitor/TV + video card upgrade combo for the holiday shopping season. That they aren't doing so thus far is NOT a good sign.

Real simple then -- that means AMD loses a lot of sales in the holiday season.

understand. Got a vega 56 flashed to 64 bios. Happy camper, not breaking a sweat here to be honest. I really cant hear the fan unless I put the my ear next to my pc.
 
I wish they would lower the price on the water cooled version in my country. Its $500 more than the stock blower.

Actually play a game and report back.

There’s no question the card is loud under load with default config. It’s been stated in nearly every review and verified by many owners.

Unless they’ve swapped the blower fan out on later manufactured cards.

I had two Vega 56. Individually they were loud — oddly enough, in Crossfire, while gaming, they seemed quieter than when just using a single.

Yeah, I have mine set to run at 4000 rpm's max and have yet to hear it under load. Now, if it clicked or whined, I would definitely notice that but, not hearing it at all.

4000 RPM on those blowers is louddddd.

Fire up a 20 minute stability test in Futuremark, or kick off a crypto mining session (with 23% power reduction even) - the blower fan has to spin up to about 2500-2800 RPM minimum to keep the card cool. That’s quite audible. I can hear that in the next room over.

I have no doubt that you notice it. :D Me? I have not noticed it at all but then again, things that bother me are the refrigerator running in the middle of the night, that is bothersome to me. I have not noticed the video card fan, at full load, at all. I have the Vega 56 card running at 50+ power limit and the temps set to 80C. (Ram is at 950.)

Loud is a Tornado fan on an AMD Athlon "Thunderbird". I haven't heard anything in PC land that's been louder. Loud to me is defined as an F/A 18 Hornet taking off with afterburn from a half mile away.

Going to disagree, the oem cooler was slightly louder (perceptibly to me) than one of my 1070s with a good fan curve with the 1070 maintaining under 70c. I'm on water though so :smuggrin:.

well I like my fans silent as possible, I use head phones but my headphones the open acoustics, so outside sounds come in easily. This is the only reason I under volt my 1080ti in my gaming system cause I like to keep my fans below 2000 RPM's, and the gpu stays around 70 c. I can still discern the CPU fan vs the GPU fan spinning up anyways, but its no where near as bad when the GPU goes above 2500, which drowns out everything else.

One thing I don't like about the latest hero series of motherboards, the CPU fan kicks in when opening files, or saving fails lol, weirdest thing. Latest bios is better than previous ones but still there.

I assume that the closed-loop Vega runs about the same, but seriously, it's the quietest fan in the case, and the card stays <50c under Furmark load holding at least 1850MHz on the core. And hell, I have the radiator on the bottom exhausting down, it's the only place that it'll fit in this Define R3!


[Have an H80i on the back exhaust, and the clearance on the top is too tight even for the Hydro's single-fan setup, while the left panel fan is too close to the card... could possibly have put it up front, but I didn't really explore that option as I'd rather have it exhausting in some fashion rather than as an intake]

I'll tell you I've been burned by stock AIOs on graphics cards. Not mod kits where I buy the AIO but when it's already incorporated. My Fury X had a fan whine and after a year the pump became very loud, both known issues that were eventually admitted to. I just bought 3x EVGA 1080tis and two of the three had the pumps die after six weeks (Capped them at 60C too just to avoid this).

Sooooo no more AIO video cards for me. I love the idea but holy hell I don't have a great track record.

I have done water cooling before, for me not worth it, don't overclock much anymore and really the only time water cooling comes into play is if ya want to overclock a lot or for looks lol, which water cooling does look good. AIO's never really liked them over full water cooled loops, too many quality issues. Saying that never tried corsair AIO's which are very recent so they might be better.

That is sexy? - in what world? I think it looks awful, but that may just be me...

I'm talking about XFX's notorious penchant for form over function in their custom cards.

I've had an XFX DD 7970 (One of the worst custom 7970s on the market in terms of function) as well as am typing this right now on a computer with a XFX DD R9 290, they sacrifice a ton of practicality for that form.

I've said from the beginning that Vega was a decent offering (if a little late) and the real issue was the price gouging. With that over can we all agree that Vega is not that bad?

Not a chance in hell would I ever buy an AMD reference blower cooler for a 300w (Power limit increase) - 500w (Actually overclocked) card.

Dealing with the reference R9 290 and R9 290x was enough for me to never ever want to do that again.

I likely lost some hearing sensitivity due to running 3 of them for so long. (My 4th was water cooled).

I doubt most other people would put up with it either given an alternative.




If they wanted to keep all the profits to themselves then they should have designed a damned open air cooler design so that they can sell their own "AIB cooler" equipped card as an option for people.

Simply not having AIB cooler equipped cards at all is classic AMD doing incredibly stupid shit to try to save some money.

Decent card for $400, I had one in a cart multiple times today. I really want one to mess around with. Just can't pull the trigger due to the poor cooler and power consumption. I want something faster than my 1070, I'll keep waiting.

Nope. Bad. Sorry to be opposed to you. I like your posts and think you are an asset to the community at large, but no I cannot recommend it.

I’ll reevaluate after a few months. But at this time it’s one of the most infuriating pieces of technology I’ve ever owned.

I honestly wouldn’t recommend it for even $300 in current driver state when compared to a 1070 or 1080. I’ve seen you experience some problems in your posts too, maybe not as many as I’ve experienced - but Nvidia is pretty much problem free by comparison. So until AMD gets their drivers in order I’ll be steering any of my friends away from the trainwreck.

Let me know when bezel correction doesn’t lock up your machine, when they actually fix freesync, when chrome stops acting laggy, when Player Unknown Battleground doesn’t dip to 8fps or crash during 75% of the rounds you play, when OpenGL works and AMD optimized games don’t drop below 30fps at 1440p, when games in general stop crashing to desktop or experiencing really laggy frame rate sections intermittendely, when Crossfire works reliably, and when you can mine with more than one algorithm (eth) without locking up. Just generally my PC went haywire with my Vegas. OS lockup’s, reboots, redscreens of death, and all of that stopped when I swapped back to the Nvidia card. I even reloaded my OS from scratch to see if that would fix it and only installed the newest AMD driver (17.10.2)— Same thing. My three other real world friends who bought launch Vegas with me all had similar experiences and all have sold theirs too. BTW - each of my friends bought more than one card. I had three, Nick had like 7 (he sold them all and went back to a pair of Fury cards), Ryan had 2, Brett had 4. All of us hated them. Strong hate. Vitriol, unhealthy hate. Regular text messages expressing massive disappointment and disgust in our group chat.

Absolute JUNK drivers since launch. Barely getting better over two months.

Terrible experience. The only things I liked about the card was the silver aluminum and red LED cosmetics and the default color profile/10bit/black levels. I’m still of the opinion AMD cards throw a bit better picture, but when you enable 10 bit on Nvidia it gets close enough. I miss freesync, but it didn’t work on my Vegas anyway, and adaptive sync on the 1080ti is halfway there and at least better than vsyncs mouse lag.

The pair of Fury X cards I owned were nearly perfect. Freesync always worked for me. I’d go back to them in a heartbeat over my Vegas. Just got the one Vega left, when it comes back from RMA it’s outta here too — I’ll feel lighter for ridding myself of this nonsense.

AMD cards (that are actually new) don't generally have even beta quality drivers until at least 1 year after release.

Thinking that Chrome would work properly with an AMD card that is barely 6 months old by the most conservative estimate is amusing.

I never experienced that with my AMD 285, or Fury X cards, nor with any of my Nvidia cards. It’s terribly annoying to have to deal with a dozen different bugs on your daily use machine. I’ve said in a other post that those AMD drivers for Vega to this point don’t even seem good enough to be called beta drivers.

When AMD does large changes, like with the 7970/7950, R9 290x/R9 290, the drivers take the timeline I outlined above to mature (generally). 285 and Fury X aren't really all that new in terms of architecture outside of the memory compression improvement and some geometry engine improvements.

I had expected Vega to be similar enough to Fury to not encounter all those ridiculous bugs. I was wrong.

I had a 290x during launch and that is a crock on the drivers, they worked just fine as for the reference cooler I can agree that it sucked but not nearly as bad as the FX 5800 my friend had, my god that thing was loud. The 290X was one of my favorite video card upgrades and gave me almost no headaches in games which is what I liked.

If I didn't already have a 1070 and I were in the market for a card at the 1070/Ti/Vega 56 level, I'd be tempted to hop on the Vega 56 bandwagon. I don't have either Freesync or Gsync so I'm not tied to either platform.

If I were considering a card at the Vega 64/1070 Ti/1080 level, I'd give the nod to the 1080. Vega 64 is not that much better than the 56 and the 1080 has been out for over a year and performs more consistently.

I'd probably feel the 'not that bad' in your post would be more accurate if we were talking about a card that was released within a couple of months of the Pascal stack but even with over a year of knowing what the competition is was not nearly enough time for RTG to limp to the starting line.

My old Radeon 8500LE was the worst as far as drivers. They wouldn't even install correctly. I remember that I had to a bit of searching just to find out that I'd have to extract the package using PowerArchiver and then install from the command line with various switches. There were other goofy issues but ATI eventually fixed most of them IIRC. It somewhat soured me on ATI/AMD hardware but luckily the last few cards of theirs that I've owned have been just fine.

My release day RX480 has basically been perfect for what that's worth, as was my 5850 before it.
If we are going to troll then Chrome is garbage spyware that needs to DIAF
