Thinking back to Everquest and memories of Crushbone being level 10 and how INSANE Orc trains were..Or Cazic Thule after revamp how intense that place was, and dungeons in general..those frightening scary moments are something completely missing in WoW, todays MMO's, where everythings pretty much easy-mode til max level and no real danger.

Did Vanguard succeed in risk-reward type play? Did it accomplish re-creating oldschool dangerous type eq feel? What exactly were Vanguards biggest flaws?

there were plenty of risks in vanguard:

you could fall through the world
you could crash to desktop
the NPC you needed to find could be "kidnapped" (aka never in the game)
an important skill you just got from leveling up may or may not work

The game needed another year before release, maybe more.

Funny thing is you get all the self-styled hardcore MMO purists on the official forums whining about the fast-travel and easy leveling and trivial death penalty (in their opinion), and completely missing the point that it is in fact a steaming pile of garbage.
Worst engine ever, old-fashioned gameplay that doesn't offer anything new, uninspired, grindy quests, every system in the game suffers from either endless bugs or awful performance. I liked the scale of the world, but that's pretty much it.
They didn't so much need more time as an entirely different team of developers from the start.

I'm one of those retards still playing this game, been playing it since launch, have multiple level 50's, and I am in an endgame raiding guild. (ex eq addict)

There are soooo many things about this game that I really like. There are sooooo many things that don't work right.

#1. Problem with the leveling track is that its just too damn easy. Period. I mean I got my second char to 50 in 8 days played without really trying that hard? Um....yay fun.....thats like friggin oblivion lol. I mean its just common practice for me to petition a GM when some shit doesnt work correctly, and they basically will give me what I need to fix it because they know the game is fucked up in all sorts of ways.

The raid portion of the game is actually BETTER than the leveling track....but there are still several things that don't work right that really really can test your patience.

I really only play because there is nothing else better out atm and my other mmorpg friends play. When something new comes along that sucks less than vanguard...then we'll probably go there.

bah. slow leveling is something I LOVED about eq1.
in everquest 1 when you dinged it was like WOOOHOOO DING!!! GRATS ! GRATS!!! GRATS!!!

now every MMO gaining a level doesn't mean shit.

Being a MMORPG vet of EQ1 (65 chanter, 55 epiced rogue), UO, Asheron Call 2, Guild Wars, EQ 2 (42 chanter type), WOW (55 shaman) I can't understand the Vanguard hate. I have been playing since launch and think the game has lots to offer. Yes it does it have issues but I haven't crash in months. I love the world and dungeons. The class dynamics work well together. Yet all you hear about are the negatives. After EQ1 it is my 2nd favorite MMO. Yes WOW is polished but I can't understand why it is the monster that it is, different strokes for different folks I guess.

O well I am happy and that is all that matters. Hopefully a free trail will be available soon and some of you can try it for yourself.

Most the people playing online are retards. Anyone above 3rd grade intelligence can buy WoW and reach lvl 70 without much difficulty. WoW is very retard-friendly. sucks for those who want challenge, danger, intense experience, and feel victorious conqoring 'uber loot' instead with WoW we get top quality loot handed to us the minute you buy an expansion.

Vanguard just was not executed properly on release. Came out way too soon. It did need a whole lot more work. I played it for 6 months, well really only about 2. I did not touch it for 4 of those 6 months. I kept waiting for all the fixes that they kept promising and they just did not materialize.

It had one helluva lot of potential to be a great game, it just never materialized sadly.
The game engine looked good, mostly. The damn textures they used in the hills/mountains and on rocks made them look plastic, never did figure out how they managed that when the rest of the game looked so good. Crafting was abysmal and at least for me too fraking hard to figure out. I did like that if you could see an area on a map you could actually get there. I had a blast with my Monk until they broke the damn nerf bat on em. The game just got very repetitive very fast. I got bored around level 20 and just quit playing.
