v7 Client update

So is this V7 supposed unify CPU and GPU clients? I was a little trying to follow exactly what the feature set is going to be...

cant wait.....isnt v7 where AMD GPU's are supposed to be fully/better supported ?

If so, I hope this will make AMD/ATI cards more competitive with the nVidia cards. We should hopefully see a decent increase in ppd, being that a bunch of guys are waiting on this client to be released.

Tobit can probably answer better but in a nutshell.

v7 is supposed to be a unified client for all WU types - no more GPU/SMP/Classic clients

v7 is required for the upcoming OpenCL ATI & NV cores, supposedly this is core 16 but this may change. This is the new core that is supposed to improve AMD GPU performance

Not necessarily. AMD support might be released with v7 but v7 is so much more than that.

Edit: Nathan pretty much summed it up

Great news, better ATI GPU support is what I'm really looking forward too. The minute the opencl core is released I'm selling my 9800gx2 and getting some HD6xxx or HD5xxx. I have 15 pcie slots ready (well a few are pcie1 8x).

no i dont think so, V7 client is a full redesign of the client to simplify the client and the install/run process. aka think more along the lines of gpu tracker. theres more to it then just that as well but hard to say from the limited information so far. but i dont think we will see the openCL client released with it.

. but i dont think we will see the openCL client released with it.

But it seems the support for the new ATI client can/will be nested inside it in the future.

One of many hurtles left crossed.

yeah it should be but we're on Pande Group time here. if the V7 client is just in alpha and pande group is calling for a Q1 release on the client, i highly doubt it. same goes for the openCL client. no way either of them are getting released in Q1 unless they completely skip the beta group which isnt going to happen.

but eh doesnt matter to me anyways when the V7 clients released, i like the clients the way they are.

New clients never go to the beta team, they go from closed alpha to public beta. The beta team is for testing of new work units and cores only.

ahh ok, though really doesn't make any sense why they do that but at least it means a Q1 release is possible now.

Ouuuu!

This is exciting as you GPU folders will finally have an alternative assuming that this new client makes ATI GPU's very competitive. At this time I simply cannot afford any increases in electricity usage, but I can't wait to give it a spin for a few days on my 5850's in the gaming rig.

Be careful with that, clients might go to closed beta for 1-2 days before getting public to make sure everything work right. I remember trying a few new clients in closed beta in the past.

Anyone know what the new client will bring for the nVidia 200-series cards in regards to GPU3 WU performance? I have a GTX 295 running 512Mhz shader clocks and it's only doing 7000 PPD per client. Most of my G92 cards are nearly at 6000 PPD and some are even faster.

But it isn't typical and I was quoting the "beta team requests" thread on FF so I have nothing to be careful about this time. :p

Note: A quick recap of what Beta Testers do:
A) They test work units from new Beta Projects
B) They test new beta versions of FahCores
They don't test new F@h Clients. That is handled separately and generally done as an Open Public Beta:

The new client itself should not affect performance on any platform unless new cores are also released. Remember, the client isn't doing any computational work. The client is merely a wrapper for interacting with the core, Core11 in the case of GPU2 and Core15 for GPU3. The core would have to change for you to see any performance difference. I can't comment, at this time, as to whether there are any new core versions in development.

Yes, you're right Tobit. I was under the impression that core16 would be released at or close to the same time as the new client. I thought they come hand in hand but guess I'm mistaken about it. :(

Little is know about exactly which features will roll out with the new client when the first version is released to the public. Vijay has stated before that some of the more advanced or exotic features, such as remote management of other clients (kinda like how BOINC works), would likely come at a later date. I'm only speculating here, but I suspect the first v7 client we see will be pretty basic, focusing on existing cores first, and the newer cores, such as Core16, will come after that. I could be, and hope I am, wrong however.

Remember, with a new client, new server code also has to be propagated so it isn't just a matter of letting us download and run a new client at will. We may not even see all projects migrated over to the new client initially either. Heck, they still have some servers running v5 code.

I think he is asking if they will employ fixes to prevent the current workarounds allowing you to trick the client into running -bigadv on an X6.

will v7 prevent bigadv folding on an X6?

possibly but depends on how long it takes them to remove the current client from the support list. seeing as how they still support clients that are 2+ years old i'm sure it will still be supported for a while.

^Not very likely.....Like i7 8 threads, PG states they shouldn't be used, but as long as the client/program isn't messed with, they aren't actively caring if true 8 cores are used and deadlines are met.

Probably no more than now, but who knows if the current ways people get BigAdv to run on X6 processors will work on V7. I'm sure someone will figure it out if possible.
