I know it's Tom's, but I found this very interesting.

I'm planning on a RAID5 array, but I'm on a tight budget and this could save me $200 on a controller card. My array is for one computer and would only be used for storage of music, movies, etc so speed wouldn't be a big issue.

However, keeping my data safe is important, and running my array off a hacked version of Windows makes me a little learly.

Thoughts?

If anyone is wondering what's going on, I posted a link to a guide on how to use Windows XP to setup software RAID5 and Douglite, a new moderator, decided to remove it 4 months later.

If I had known the link was against forum rules, I would not have posted it, and would have removed it myself had anyone asked.

If anyone wants the link, I suggest you try seaching www.google.com , and if you're not smart enough to find it, you shouldn't be messing around with your registry anyway.
 
I've considered it, but you can get a cheapass RAID5 card like I have (highpoint rocketRAID 454) for under $90. If you want a little better one, go for the rocketRAID 464, which I believe is true hardware RAID 5, and under $140. If for nothing else, at least the extra card gives you more IDE slots.
 
You shouldn't make mention to your juarezed winxp here, i think its a forum sin. :p

Dynja, will having a non-hardware raid card have any benefit over doing straight from the os, other then extra ports?

I don't think you read the article. By hacked, he means you need to edit the registry to allow software RAID5.

There are some benefits because windows is really picky about things, but as far as performance benefits, I would be willing to bet that they are about the same.
 
Not a fast as the hardware, but my file server at home is definitely about to try this.
