Hello all,

My dad gave me his old school 20 year old JBLs to hook up to my computer via reciever. It's a center piece and two bookshelf size speakers. However, looking behind the two speakers, it says it is a "Flix 2 Surround". I looked for the owners manual online and it is made to be positioned, as you guessed, in the rear.

It sounds pretty good with me having it connected as front left and right, but I'm wondering if it's sounding more "echo-ey" because I'm placing them in the front, and would it affect how games are supposed to sound in a 5.1 setup.

Thanks

I'm going to talk crap for a while but hang on.

The reason why it might sound slightly strange is if their not full range speakers. In a 5.1 setup the .1 is a 6th channel that only deals with low bass. Most modern day speakers are full range, meaning that they deal with most of the sound spectrum, from highs to lows, and you have to set cut offs. But on older 5.1 speaker sets, the task was split between a subwoofer for just the bass and other limited range speakers that dealt with higher bits. Bass is non directional, meaning its harder to place where a bass sound is coming from, so theres no point positioning it. So one reason they might sound more echoey is that they lack the bottom end, making them sound hollow. I need to sleep, so that might have just be a load of crap but it made sense to me.
