Using Open Source Software = Rookies Mistake

Disney has a rather significant chance to crawl into the minds of children. I'm not really sure why it's worth worrying about though since the target audience is tweens and such for those kinda shows. Maybe they slipped that in there on purpose to get nerds, who are an easily excited group, fired up so they could laugh about it. Disney is trolling you people and you're falling for it. It's also nice to see nerd kid stereotypes like wearing glasses and nice sweaters sticking around in modern culture.

Oh, and this is sentence number six in my post. :p

I can always count on you, Skribble!

I don't know I think that's a pretty minor "dig" at best. I'll bet you half of the Disney execs don't even understand the term "open source" :p

No, they understand it as "something we can't control, something that can allow pirates to do whatever they want, and finally something that we can't make money off of!"

Wow... When I read this I thought it was gonna be worse than it was, but after watching the vid, I think it may just be uneducated script writers who don't even know what open source means...

If they wanted to annoying the Linux community more, they could have just banned bearded guys from their films...

Maybe this is revenge for that Hannah Montana distro...

Yeah, OPEN source code is the place where someone would choose to hide a virus.

Q: Is this simply incompetence on the part of the writer, or does the writer hate open-source software? Some people do, those in competition with free software.

script writers - the people who brought you "jumping the shark", the plot of Lost and the well crafted dialog of movies like Star Wars Episode 3.

Seriously, this is just some writers off day when he just makes stuff up and the only people reading the lines before it airs is the actors.

Yeah, the other day I downloaded an open source program, and I looked into the source and found a virus! It was pretty nasty. Here's what I found:

if (user.UserName == "SkribbelKat")
{
var DOM = LaunchBrowser("http://hardforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=116");
DOM.ClickFindMostRecentPostInVbulletin();
DOM.FindTextArea();
DOM.CreateTrollPost();
DOM.TriggerEnterKeyPress();
}

I wasn't sure so I deleted those lines before I compiled the program to be on the safe side. It's easy to get caught with your pants down with those open source viruses!

Ooh, I've seen that one before! It's reeeeeally horrible, but I think it's only because it's got all those DOMs in it and they're very upset because no one thought to give them a few SUBs to slap, whip, or kick with their six inch spike heeled black leather thigh boots. Just add some SUBs and everything will be balanced out. There'll even be rainbows and puppies and kittens!

That could be simplified to

void main() {
while (SkribbelKat == awake) {
Troll()
}
}

:D

I like the way they seem to be using a laptop without USB ports on the side an the kid plugs a USB into the side. Also is it an apple air? are they indirectly saying apple can get viruses to (like we all know they can).
what are you talking about...

The problem I have with this, is that it seems like they're spreading propaganda. Like if suddenly companies realized that if open source gets popular, they're screwed. Lets start when they're young and stupid.

Remember, Walt Disney was a vocal anti-Semite and a big Mussolini supporter and very anti communist. So its not at all surprising that people he appointed to be in charge after his death carried on his indoctrinations... one of which would be .. open source = communism

Enhance that source code!
Now pan and zoomify on that block.
Rotate 180 degrees on the Y-axis scroll bar.
Enhance the reflection on the semicolon.
There, we found the Y2K virus.

LOL, I noticed that too. Funny how they deny Apple their free advertising and cover up the glowing Apple logo. (since free advertising is the point behind that)

Worrying about stupid things like this affecting the minds of children is just about as stupid as people thinking video games are inciting violent behavior.

Yeah because like nothing you ever do/see/hear ever has an influence on your behaviour or anything like that huh? Especially when you're a 1337 pc buildin' genius with no behavioural issues and an 11year membership on [H] roxorzzzz :rolleyes:

open source = pirated = free = fucking stupid suits

are you sure about this?????

open source = free for all = you don't have to pay for it if you don't want to (yes this has changed now)

pirated = you steal and use it without paying for it where you should have to pay for it (you don't have choice without stealing.)

I don't know what the two of you think you saw but macbook airs have usb ports on the side...and it's pretty clear from the video. and the kid with the mba doesn't have a virus the two asians have the virus but need him to "fix it" because their computers are down :confused:

My favorite is still this guy from Olympics in London, where Samsung was one of the main sponsors :

Purple FTW :D

Open Source = No deeply integrated DRM enforcement.
Open Source = circumventing monopolies.

Expect to see more and more propaganda against open source.

Nah its just some script writer who has a bit of a tech hobby and just decided for a laugh to enrage a load of kids.

Add a little line in and sit back and watch the forums go crazy with nerd rage.

It's what I'd do, as folks are so easy to fish for.

Open source code is not open source software. And its a long long jump from using open source code to and claiming it screwed up your computer to saying open source software is bad. Really really stretching here...
Plus that's a MacBook Air, with Macs you just buy software through the iTunes store :D god forbid you use something opensource :D (ok taunting a bit here) unless its a Zenbook then its more likely someone knows what they are doing.

Bottom line, we have 4 pages of posts over 25 sec clip of a kids show taken out of context.

I think this is more of a script writer trying to modernize the concept of someone using someone else's work rather than doing their own ... since this seems to be targeted at a student who was supposed to write their own code and went and grabbed "open source" code instead ... hard to tell from a 25 second clip ;)

I honestly don't think anybody should take that clip seriously, its a kids show..

True, but whoever wrote the script for that episode took it seriously enough that they felt the need to directly and prejudicially attack open source software. I mean it was a pretty blatant and forward attempt to say "open source is bad and prone to viruses". Somebody definitely had an agenda up their sleeve, whether it came from corporate or the writer himself.

Unless the agenda was actually "if you use someone else's work when you should have done something yourself, bad things happen" and we are just reading more into it ... the line where the stereotypical nerd kid accuses her of using open source code in order to "save time" implies that this was probably a project she was supposed to code herself ... hard to tell too much from just 25 seconds ... as Freud once said, "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar" :D

99.9% of the people infantile enough to watch that show will forget that comment almost immediately after the kid makes it. It's not propaganda, imo, it's just typically bad script writing whenever the subject of computer technology comes up. I'd say that 99 times out of 100, Hollywood script writers (don't forget book authors) get computer stuff wrong. They read someone's biased "opinion" somewhere and walk away thinking they have "a handle" on the subject when they are really more ignorant than when they started. There's just no short-cut to or substitute for hands-on tech knowledge--you cannot read a book and walk away conversant with even the basics of how technology actually works.

As far as this specific case goes, man, are the open-source folks sensitive, or what? This doesn't deserve comment, except if you want to talk about all of the idiotic ways scriptwriters portray computer tech. This is just one of hundreds of examples of people scripting lines that aren't quite "accurate" when it comes to computer tech. It's no wonder the public at large is dumb on the subject. I mean, how else could Apple continue to sell Macs if not for a general ignorance present in a minority of the computer-buying public? They've been fed a line of malarkey from Apple PR Scriptwriters, which they've mistaken for truth. Sad, isn't it? A person's only defense at being manipulated in technical matters is hands on experience with *varied* tech brands.

Srsly? 10 bucks says it was some script writing intern who thought they were being witty. You know, just like the tools who write for the Big Bang Theory.

Speaking from personal experience, most writers end up, at some point, writing about things which they have never done and have no experience in. It means that, if a writer gets remotely technical about any particular topic, there'll be someone out there who has done whatever they're writing about and will be able to say, "Hey, you wrote this, but that's not how it is in the real world! I know better because I've been doing this for the last 30 years!"

No one is ever experienced enough at life, history, the universe, and everything to accurately encapsulate it in thought, convert that thought from an abstract idea into a meaningful mental image, and then build a series of words that will perfectly emulate it in a narrative form which injects a mirror of the image into another person's mind. An effective writer will certainly research something quite well, but is ill-advised to get specific enough to have their in-depth knowledge called into question. This is why so many writers focus on things that exist as purely fictional or fantastic ideas. No one can question the technical accuracy or a steampunk style airship using the resonance between space and time as a power source for impossible weapons as it travels between worlds by crossing dimensional barriers. Also, as long as you're writing about a long gone past, no one alive really has personal experience with how something used to be and can really question your interpretation of historic fiction as long as you get the broader aspects of it right and don't introduce anything glaring that the continuity police will use as a reason to break down your door in the middle of the night.

When dealing with modern, everyday life, it's easier and better for the suspension of a reader's (or viewer's) disbelief, to not make the mistake of getting specific enough to have your knowledge or understanding called into question. In the case of this show, most children wouldn't give the dialogue a second thought so it works for them and the writers did their jobs. The unintended adult audience though, it contains a few angry nerds who like to argue about anything they can in forums. I'm pretty sure that subculture is too extreme and too small to bother loosing sleep over at night when it goes on a mad rampage among itself to a world that generally doesn't listen to it.

I do the whole systems administrator thing for a living and I don't even take on deeply technical computing topics in my fictional writing because it doesn't add anything to the story to go there and there'll always be some crazy nerd that goes, "Hey! That requires such-and-such obscure thing that no one uses to do that so the other 248,406 words in your story are also stupid!"
