I recently recieved an email that mentioned this ("...just plug one end into your monitor and the other into your USB port!") and was wondering if there really was such a device (the email itself was a scam; trying to get my creditcard number)

Anyone seen a usb video card? (and i dont mean a tv-out/dubbing thing) if so, about how much do they cost?

I have never heard of one of those. Since it came in an email like that, I have to say it is fake.
 
I think I saw something about one of these in a PC World article . . .

Guy hooked it up to his computer to get dual-monitor support, said the refresh rate was sub-par :)surprise: :p ). That's . . . about all I remember.


Edit: Now if it was a Firewire video card, well, I'd obviously be interested. But USB? Pisha . . . ;)

I'd like one because my file/internet server sits on a shelf behind 2 boxes, next to a cabinette in the corner away from everything. I have a 12-foot USB cable/hub I use to connect mouse/keyboard/etc and I have to almsot lie on the floor to see the monitor...

I'd like to be able to hook my LCD upto it (but the table is several feet away --- where my cord will not reach. and I cant move the table or shelves due to the fact the room is cramemd full of boxes...)

I also am having some graphical issues with the current Gfx (I'm an EQ junkie and it displays the character model's heads and that's about it... also doesn't display ceiling/floor/walls/water/etc in some zones, it also flickers like mad in others...) and it's an on-board card... and the computer has no AGP slot... (Soyo something-or-other, 900mhz W 512 ram... everything onboard) So I though that might be an option to get a better video card w/o needing an AGP slot (which I dont have).

If anyone knows another solution, I'm glad to hear it!

Uhh, a USB video card could probably only do 2D and very very limited 3D. I wouldnt expect to play any game at all with it. Not only would it be slow as hell, but you'd be lucky if the USB card even supported the minium effects needed.

Just grab a PCI video card, something like a Radeon 9200 or something, just make sure it has a 128bit memory bus. You'll have to figure out cable length issues on your own though.
 
If I have to, I can get a 10' monitor extention cable for $20... I was just hoping to kill two birds with one stone... and dumbass me didn't even think of PCI video (in my mind those are all still 1-4mb cards that do 256 colors).

I'll take a look at PCI video cards and monitor extention cords. Thanks all!

FX5700 from nVidia
Radeon 9250 from ATi.

From what I hear, the nVidia option is better for 3d, but costs a bit more. I personally run dual 9250s, along with an AGP card, and find that they deal with 2d fantastically.
 
Yeah like the links say, it's not a USB video card, it's more of a VGA-to-USB adapter. They don't do any acceleration.

That would be cool if they did make external video cards tho with some super-fast interface of some kind. Maybe just an extension cable that plugs into the PCI-E or AGP slot and the other end was another was another female PCI-E or AGP slot. I'm sure there's reasons it hasn't been done yet though. Imagine the cooling possibilities when you could put it in a separate case with its own WC setup or something.

Sadly, I cant afford a "best" PCI video card... I'll probably go to an online retailer like Tiger Direct and get the most memory on the lowest price (128mb looked lowest). That's not to say I wouldn't LOVE a radeon XXX with 512mb ram and a water-cooled heatsync... I jsut am extremely low on green right now...

Apparently you missed one of my posts... I'm having graphical issues with my onboard gfx, so I was looking for an alternative graphics card. . . but I _am_ looking at longer monitor cables, as I said above 10' for $20 (including shipping).
 
Just drive around the neighbourhood. People throw their old computers away all the time. Most of those have PCI video cards.
