I need something for when I play games on my htpc, and don't want to run 25foot audio cables =p i do have an extended usb cable with a powered hub close by.

I have found a Creative XFI USB locally for $20 used, or do I invest in a cheapish usb headset?

only use will be for games, wireless is also an option (wireless usb =p )

otherwise I would get the usb sound card and use my ATH-AD500s and a regular analog mic

Personally i'd suggest the usb sound card method. You'll likely get better quality audio than whatever cheapo chipset the headset has built into it.

plus it looks like you've already got a pair of headphones you like.

be careful with the word "never"

now maybe these kinda cheat as they are not exactly usb but will be coming bundled with a detachable usb dac / headphone amp...

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the audio quality is going to be reasonably good on these two...
ATH-ADG1 and AG1

granted these are also going to be just under $300 ..also so not cheap.

yea, wayy to expensive, not looking to spend anywhere near $200 :D

I'm not playing competitively, and not really FPS that much, apart from BF4 which I'm fine having less "accurate" positional sound, but from the sound of it you guys suggest a sound card over USB Headset.

Even something like this? :

or this?

or this + a zalman clip on mic

im tempted to go wireless USB for the sake of no wires,

Have to go usb why?

A creative Zx would serve you best for gaming.

Htpc setup. Computer sits 15feet away behind the TV stand so running a cable would have to be 25'. I already have a USB cable placed down the side of the room I don't want to run more tbh.
