USB Overcurrent Error - PSU dying?

Mo turkey, mo problems. Come home for a holiday and it is tech fixing time.

My parents Dell conveniently decided to act up when I come home. It would not power, so I reseated everything. Then, it would freeze on booting (halfway through the Dell bios progress bar), so I reset the CMOS. Still wouldn't pass bios. I unplugged all the peripherals and surprise, we're into windows. Getting somewhere.

I try all the different USB ports (and differing number of plugged in devices), and I get varying results of no boot, booting to a USB over current warning, or not even powering on. I looked for a bent pin or a short on the mobo or metal on metal, but found nothing. I unplugged all the front USB ports and media card readers, but same result.

The only devices plugged in were a keyboard, mouse, and printer. Still, I could find no pattern of what happened depending on what was plugged in.

Thoughts? Is the cheap ass Dell PSU on its last leg or do I have another problem on my hands?
 
Nope. Bought and installed new PSU. Booted the first time. Second time, keyboard won't work. Third time, USB over current error. Unplugged all the devices, booted up. When I was in windows with everything working, a front USB would not work.

I tried plugging in the peripherals into my netbook. The keyboard is clearly shot. It is not recognized by any computer I plug it into consistently. The mouse was recognized the first time I plugged it in, but not after that. The printer worked fine.

The new PSU did allow it to power on with everything plugged in, but I would still get the over current error on occasion and the keyboard would not work. Is it possible that the keyboard got so fried that it is pulling a ton of power? Even so, the mouse would only work on 3 of the 8 ports. Maybe they managed to fry some of them somehow, but they all still push enough power for a USB memory stick, so they can't be totally dead. Only once did I get it into windows, plugged the keyboard in and was able to type the password in, but it died before I could hit enter. :confused:

Dell's fine craftsmen also wired the front USB ports all wrong. I told them not to buy the damn Dell.
 
After replacing the PSU and the keyboard, it started working again. The PSU solved the fact that it wouldn't even turn on, but it was still getting an overcurrent error with the keyboard plugged in. Very strange, but fixed.
