USB Lockup???

I came home to my computer today being locked up (screen off would not respond) and after some testing realized that the USB was giving power to thing but not actually working, like if I pluged in my thumbdrive the light lit up but my mouse/keyboard would not work no matter how many times I plugged/unplugged them in, even tried moving them to other slots, no luck.

Hard to reboot it via the reset button and now everything works great...

MOBO: asus p5q-e, any ideas?

Can you reproduce the problem by plugging in the flash drive again?

It hasnt happened again, and I only used the flash drive to test for power on the USB, it wasnt plugged in when the issue happened.

I'd probably guess it was just a random thing unless it keeps happening. I probably wouldn't worry about it.

I'm having a similar problem. I'm using the Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3L and only recently when plugging in my ipod or usb key into the back usb ports (directly on the mobo) my pc goes to a sleep like state. The monitor goes into power saving mode but my tower has all the fans still running. However mouse and keyboard movement can't pull it out of sleep and I have to hard reset my machine.

This has left me to sleeping or shutting down my PC just to plug in a usb device then wake it back up.

hmmm your problem might be somthing to do with you usb settings in BIOS, not sure but I seem to remember seeing some strange bios settings for usb/sleep stuff

I've got nothing in the BIOS related to USB sleep stuff. I went through it yesterday all options with the manual. I've also uninstalled the drivers in windows and let them come back and still.

I would try to use these USB devices while running a Linux LiveCD or so, just to rule out an OS issue.

Ok I'll give that a try tonight. When I plugged in my printer and usb headphones it was fine. It seems to do it only when I plug in my ipod or my usb key.

@ SuperChicken : Gigabyte boards with P35 chipset have a strange behavior with USB drives documented in this specific thread-> link .
You should disable Legacy USB Storage Detect !

Ha, I was considering that but wasn't sure about it. I'll try it out and see if it helps.

edit: Yeah I had it off already same problem.
Here is a picture of my bios options pertaining to the USB stuff.

I've also uploaded a video (sorry about rapid share not sure where else to upload) showing what happens. This only happens when I plug in my iPod or usb key, it doesn't happen with my usb headphones (speakers and mic) or my printer.

If it was already off, maybe try turning it on and see if it still does the same thing, worth a try anyways

It was defaulted on, I disabled it last week.

Ok just for shits and giggles I reformat my pc and was getting the same problem so it's not vista. I also photographed my bios and defaulted it back to er.. default.

After booting with that fresh copy of vista I plugged in my ipod and voila no lockup!

I'm assuming it was my overclock which was having my usb ports semi-sleep-state my mobo.

Anyone know how I could reoverclock and have my usb ports not do this?
