Hey I was modding a USB controller for a case mod I was doing, and I was hoping to connect it to the USB header on my motherboard. Well, I look at the cable connection on the controller's PCB, and there are 5 wires that connect to the cable, but USB pinouts show that there are only 4 pins. There are two black wires, so I'm thinking that the extra one is used for the cable shielding? I peeled off a little heatshring that was on the end of the USB cable and it looked like the second black wire was connected to the cable shielding. If I wire the other four cables to my motherboard's USB headers, can I just leave the 5th wire unconnected, or should I connect it to something else?

i had this problem with my Cheiftec case and my MSI board. From my case there were 3 ground wires. I just used 2 of them and all works well now.

I am probably wrong but I always just assumed the 5th wire was to make sure you didn't plug the header in the wrong way.

I don't think I did a very good job of explaining my problem. Here are some pics:

Note that there are 2 black wires and 5 wires in all. Standard USB pinouts call for only 4 wires, and I'm wondering what to do with the 5th.

ahhh...

for whatever reason I was thinking of the pins that come off a mobo.

I'm not saying I"m not wrong but y'know.

USB has 4 acutall wires, sometimes there is a 5th

1 +5 VDC - Red
2 -Data - White
3 +Data - Green
4 GND - Black
5 Shield/GND - Black (usually heat-shrink)

just tie the two blacks together, you should be ok
