It would seem to be my curse that i cna never get usb 2.0 on my comp. I jsut build a new conroe pc this week and I have already gotten the message that this usb device can perform faster if you connect it to a hi-speed usb 2.0 port.

my problem is that i have done all the correct steps so shouldn;t windows do it for me?
i installed windows with sp2 and updates slipstreamed into it, then i install the chipset driver that comes with the cd and then i go to the gigabyte website and dl and install the even newer chipset driver but i still can't get usb2 enabled.

I have a ds3 and antec p160.

in device manager, i see 5 usb controller nad 2 usb enchanced controller. and when i click on the bubble that tells me to sue usb 2.0 ports, i cna see 10 possible ports.

please advice on how to get all my usb ports up to usb 2.0 specs..
i have enabled usb2.0 i bios

the drivers i see are version 8.0.0.1008 for the usb universal host controller for ich8
adn teh driver date is 4/10/2006

i get the same details for my usb2 enchanced host controller.

please help

Right click on an unrecognized port and do drivers update, let it search for it on your hard drive, for me, that always fixes it.
 
the problem is not that its unrecognised but the fact that its stuck at usb1.1 ... i don;t know how to find and utilise the usb 2.0 ports.. i know that i have them but i can't find them
 
actually I have the same problem! Never get around to finding out why it's doing it though.... :(
 
Just out of curiosity, have you tried connecting the same device to every available port to see if you get the same message?
 
Yes I know, mine gets stuck at 1.1 too after each format, hence do the driver update, it should find it within the windows installation.
 
i will try with the windows installation disk..
i tried with every available port and its all 1.1

after seaching thourgh google i found tha tthis seems to be a recurrent problem when you have an usb device in use when isntalling windows,,

now i Have to ask, does a usb mouse with a ps2 adapter considered an usb device or is it a ps2 device , cos the cure for this problem is a fresh install an I don;t really want to reinstall

can any others with this problem post if htey remember installing windows with a usb mouse via a ps2 adapter.. maybe thats the cause of the pop up msg saying your device could run faster if connected to a usb2 port

If you use an adapter, like the green ones that come with MS mice, it will be seen as a PS/2 device.

An enhanced USB controller is another way of saying USB 2.0 controller. That is the test you can do on a foreign system to see has USB 2.0 or not. I checked my system and sure enough, no enhanced USB contollers. Then I went out and bought a USB 2.0 card and sure enough next time I looked in device manager I had enhanced USB controllers. So if you are able to see enhanced USB contollers in device manager then you have USB 2.0 and Windows knows it.
 
yes soldur i know thats why i am asking on as to how to activate it so that when i plug something in it will be usb 2 instead of usb 1.1

ps: i tried seaching through the installation disk but no luck. anyone else know how to solve this problem?
 
As much time as it seems you have spent on it, you should probably just go out and buy a $10 USB2 PCI card, use that and be done with it. :eek:
 
Since no one has mentioned it yet I will - have you looked in your MB BOIS to ensure that your USB ports are active and set to 2.0? I could see some boards sending them stock forced at 1.1 or disabled or something.
 
i did enable the settings in bios..

soldur if thats the case then whats the point in doing a custom build comp? anything that doesn;t go right, youjsut go and get a new part for it.. might as well go get a dell..

Are you running service pack 2? I know that when I built my new rig, I couldn't use usb2.0 w/o it.
 
i tried that as well..

its no good.. do you think a fresh install would fix the probolem? i really don't want to do it.. it sucks
 
As NefariousD said, if you are havent installed XP SP2, its unlikely that you will get high speed USB connections.
There is a patch for SP1 but installing SP2 fixes it anyway.

Have you got SP2 installed?
 
if you look at my first post, i do have sp2 isntalled.. infact i slipstreamed sp2 as well as other hotfixes into my xp install so i don;t really know wheres the problem arising that i can;t use usb2

anyone know how to fix it?
 
try going to device manager and then to hardware and then re-install drivers for all usb controllers. Worked for me.
 
That's the best way for sure. If SP2 is already installed, disconnect all USB devices, use Device Manager to unistall all USB controller entries, then reboot and let them be reinstalled.

Thanks man. Just went there and clicked "update driver" for usb devices. "Found New Hardware" popped up like 6 times. I feel like a dumbass now.
 
i tried that and it didn;t work.. i uninstalled all teh usb controllers and then reboot .. it didn;t work i still get the message that your device can perform faster if you connect it to a usb2.0 device..

does anyone else have any idea on what to do

to recap: i have ensured that usb 2.0 is enabled, i have installed sp2 and all of the chipset drivers from intel..
i have tried searching though the windows disc again,
i have tried letting device driver search through the net for a newer drvier, i have uninstalled and reinstalled everything regardgin usb

all those didn;t work

and you have all up dates from MS and then re install drivers for USB and it doesn't work. Something isn't right. Works everytime for me. Might think about another motherboard then. Somethings not right.
 
this is seriously fucked up.. i reinstalled my winxp twice using two different xp discs in order to solve this crap but no,.. both have the same problem..

i reinstalled them.. add service pack2.. add chipset drivers, add gigabyte usb2.0 drivers
all without a single usb port being used..

and i still get this shit..

ahhhh

am i forver cursed to never enjoy the speed of teh usb2.0 system??

anyone else has any other ways of solving this dumb crap..
if not who should i contact to solve this problem..
gigabyte, intel or microsoft?
 
I think the next step would be to look at the device you are connecting to the system. Have you tried another device, preferably a jump drive, plugged into the computer?

Im not even sure what you are connecting to the system; but does it need its own windows drivers?
 
I see you running through a lot of "triage stuff" but I don't see where you're checking if the port your plugging the device into is actually a 2.0 port.

start >> run "devmgmt.msc"

View >> Devices By Connection.

Expand the ACPI tree, expand the PCI bus tree and then see if the device is plugged in to a port off the USB EHCI controller.
 
I am experiementing with a 1gig usb pen drive.. i know its usb capable cos it works on other machines at usb 2 speeds.. i don;t have any other usb stuff at teh moment
it doesn;t need its own win drivers so thats not the problem
seanpr: what do you mean by connectign to teh system.. i can use it at usb 1 speeds

der_jackal: i don;t see a difference when looing at it though your way.. using standard access to device manager i see it plugged in to a storage mass controller

soldur: i don;t really want to buy pci port as i have more htan enough on my mobo only that it sucks.. i don't wanna take the risk that buying the pci card that doesn't work as well

i mean there must be hundreds of 6400 adn ds3 owners out there it can;t be jsut me that is having this problem..
 
well gigabyte replied to my quesry adn all they got is to set cmos back to optimised default reinstall teh usb drivers and chipset drivers and they ask whether or not i have sp2 installed when i mentioned in the query that i have sp2 slipstraemed...

Okay, I think I need to back up and re-read here...

You're trying to get all your ports to be USB2.0, correct?

What ports are you having problem with? Are they front / top panel on your case or the main ports off the back of the board?








Damn Gigabytes' site is SLOW.
 
i have problems with all of my ports..

i can;t get usb 2.0 enabled on any of my ports
including the ones on the backplate which is provided by gigabyte
 
You do know that there is a BIG difference between USB 2.0 and High Speed USB 2.0 ports, right?

I noticed in your first post that the device was bitching because it was not plugged into a High Speed USB 2.0 port. Does your motherboard have the High Speed USB 2.0 ports, or just the regular USB2.0 ports?

Just a sanity check here...

The whole reason I have been suggesting an add-on card to the OP was that my motherboard had the same problem. It had USB2.0 but they were not High-Speed so my transfer rates were horrible. I bought the add-in card for ~$10 and now on the high speed USB2.0 I can transfer 1 gig per minute to my external hard drive....
 
IMO throwing money at it, even a meager $10 isn't resolving the problem. Just burying it.

I have the same problem as the OP with a twist. I have an unpowered USB2 hub attached to my PC that sits on my desk and anything I plug into that works like a charm with USB2 speeds but anything plugged into the machine otherwise gets USB1 speeds.

However, like someone mentioned earlier I had a few devices plugged in at the time of installation and update so that could be the cuplrit for some bizarre reason.

Ultimately it would be nice to find resolution to this stupid problem.
 
i got a ds3 and my pther ports are those that comes with an antec p160, i would assume they are both hispeed usb2

i am working under the assumption that hispeed usb2 is the same as usb 2.. and that i got usb1.1

if there are 3 different speeds of usb i want the best one and my equipment should bloody well support it as i have spent a shitload of money on it and i expect it to work and not give me crap


i mean i have reinstalled windows twice to try and get the bloody thing working and it still wouldn't give me the best usb transfer speed

Soldur, that article isn't saying that there are two different standards, one being USB 2.0 and the other being Hi-Speed USB. It is merely pointing out that manufacturers are not adhering to the formal nomenclature.

To avoid customer confusion the products should correctly be called 'USB' and 'Hi-speed USB' respectively. Instead, many manufacturers are calling them 'USB 1.1' and 'USB 2.0' respectively. This is confusing, because both the original USB and the faster Hi-speed USB devices adhere to the USB 2.0 standard.

As mentioned above, checking the Device manager entries for USB controllers is possibly the best way to determine which of them the motherboard is providing. Hi-speed USB controllers should be denoted as 'Enhanced USB controller'. If the controllers aren't showing up as such, check the BIOS settings before assuming that they are lower data transfer speed controllers. They may be configured to operate at the lower speed.
