Urgent Help: Desktop Keeps Freezing

Starting today my desktop has been freezing randomly, sometimes when I'm just listening to music and sometimes when I'm playing games. When it freezes, I can't do anything, I can't move my mouse and I can't even ctrl-alt-del. It just stays frozen until I manually turn off the computer.

The thing is, if I restart the computer using the restart button on the case, it shows me a message saying "Reboot and Select Proper Boot Device". But, if I turn off the computer completely and turn it on, it loads to desktop.

I need to get this solved quick as I need this desktop to study for finals.
 
Reset the bios?

The only reason I say that is because it's asking about boot devices so bios was the first thing to pop into my head.

If that doesn't work remove all but one stick of ram and see if stability improves. If it does add another and see if it's still stable and keep doing this until it isn't stable. Could have bad ram?
 
I'm guessing bad RAM as well. Best to take it outside and blow it out while you're at it to make sure it isn't a heat issue. Might also want to run HDTune or something like to test the hard drive for any bad sectors after the above.
 
[Testing the Hard Drive]
Download the CD image of Hitachi Drive Fitness Test, burn the ISO file to a CD, and then boot from it, just like you would do with the XP/Vista install CD. Test the hard drive and see if any problems are found. DFT will run on most manufacturers' hard drives. Alternatively, you can use Seagate's SeaTools for DOS to test a Seagate or Maxtor drive. For a Western Digital drive, you could use Data Lifeguard Tools for DOS to test a Western Digital drive. For a Samsung drive, you could use Samsung's ES-Tool.
 
I'll check to see if ram is an issue, been wanting to get new sticks anyway.

As for the hard drive, will it work on SSD as well? I'm running both, with SSD for OS and drivers.
 
Well, it just froze again. I decided to wait and a window came up saying "Windows 7 this program is not responding". Now it doesn't detect my crucial m4 ssd.

Possible bad SSD firmware? Any upgrades available or did you upgrade it lately? I know SSD's have had similar problems, not sure if they've been resolved across the board yet though.
 
SATA cable. Power supply. SSD. Motherboard.

Likelyhood of problem in roughly that order.
 
I just updated the firmware for my Crucial M4. If it freezes again I'll try out the things you guys listed above.
