UPS is always a good idea. Find out how big of a UPS you need by going here:
http://www.apc.com/tools/ups_selector/index.cfm?action=build_form_a&device_type=workstation&app_type=workstation&showChassis=1&showMonitor=1&showProcessor=1&showVoltages=1&showIntDrives=1&showPeripherals=1&showPrinter=1&appUsed=basic&cgi_referer_check=&return_query_string=

I just figured out i only need a surge protector, i will get the Surge Arest Performance from APC for only 39,- euro's.
an ups costs me 200 euro's. a waste of money.
better flush that money through the toilet, thats much more fun :p

Those prices sound too high. Are you paying retail? Did you try to find your UPS on APC's site that would last for 200 hours on battery? I would shop around online a bit more. I know it's not a direct euro->$ translation, but I could find a "good enough" UPS for around $100.

don't u think a surge protector is good enough? for the battery? :)
i have honestly no idea what kind of UPS i will need from APC if i look at this pc that i will get soon:
powersuply: ocz 520W
video: 7800 gtx 512mb
CPU: amd 64 4000+ san diego
2 gigs of ram and 2 hard disks.
19'' CRT
please, someone tell me why i need an UPS instead of a Surge protector.

The APC Back-UPS ES USB 750VA, which retails for $100, should fit your needs.

not to hijack this thread :D , but cant I run a computer on a surge protector or a power strip and be safe?

or is a UPS necessary?

problem is.. here in Holland we have other stopper contacts than in the US.
look at the dutch ups here.
http://www.apc.com/products/category.cfm?id=13&subid=5&ISOCountryCode=nl
the Back UPS 750 ES seems not to be available here.

David, i know that one, but the cheapest thing i get with that is a 199,- € Smart-UPS SC 620VA 230V.

now here is my noob question: do i need a 520 watt ups? because of my 520W powersuply?
or should i just stick with a surge protector.

this may look like a good sp, http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=PF8VNT3-GR

THANK U VERY MUCH

You do not need a UPS, if you have good steady electricity & you do regular data back-ups.

I live in Daytona Beach, FL. & our power grid is far from steady & we have lots of storms, including hurricanes!

It does depend on your supply from the local grid. Here in Toronto as a city, the power is pretty clean. However I have noticed that in my building, it is dirty fluctuates. A surge protector will protect you from surges but what about sags? That's where a UPS comes in. It will also act as a rectifier to ensure clean power.
