Upgrading to PCI-E

Go figure, I just upgraded my rig to a 754 platform, w/ a BFG 7800GS OC, and now i have the chance to upgrade to 939/PCI-Express. Possibly a A8N-Sli w/ an Athlon64 3200, for free, My problem is I can't drop another $350 on a video card (wife would kill me! :eek: ). What is my bet choice for a PCI-Express video card? :confused:


Oh must have SM 3.0 too
 
well 7600GT is a fine choice...

also its PCI-E not PCI-X

the others will be here to throw stones at for that heh :)

Ok so far the only suggestion is a 7600GT. It doesnt have to be an nVidia card though. I just need a 7800GS OC equivulate in PCI-E. All suggestions are more than wellcome.
 
The equivalent will be a 7800GT (GS being the AGP version) but I don't know if they make that anymore now that the 7900 series is out. You could check out Hot Deals for a deatl on a 7900 GT (it's around $270 to $330 range)

did u read his before post... he cant spend another 350... 330 is practically right there.... the 7600GT will save him some money.. get good performance. his wife will be happy he saved some money.. maybe he could take her out for a night with that saved money.. but i digress
 
yes I did read his post. I was answering his subsequent post stating the equivalence. I also stated the price just so that he is aware that the equivalent card will be out of price range.

I can go 300 as long as it under the 800 per month rent, ie 479 this month without a OS, HDD, an video card.
Basicly my buddy and landlord said to build him 2 desent systems in exchange for a few months rent, and since my componets (mobo, cpu, an gpu) are only 2 months old and cost me about 500 I figured heres a great opp to upgrade to PCI-E.

As for the wife she'll be happy if she gets her room at the HardRock Hotel this summer, $790 for two nights!
 
right now, imo, the best buy would be a 7900GT. There may be a couple of deals on newegg and monarchcomputers. Go check em out.

On the other hand, I may be a little biased because I just bought one myself.
 
How about buying a motherboard that is S939 and supports both AGP 8x and PCI-E?

Nevermind, didn't notice the getting the CPU and board for free part.

Yeah got a Athlon64 3200+ an a ASUS A8N-SLi
 
Yah you could try an ASrock 939 Dual Sata2 I use it and its a very good mobo for like 60$ and it runs AGP and PCI-E with all the bells and whistles, whouldnt have to buy anew video card that way but if you ever upgrade you wont have to buy a new mobo. Also has support for the next Gen of AMD processors too kinda nifty. Lol sorry to sound like a commerical but i just think its a good idea espically if you already have a pretty decent AGP card... even if you get the mobo just sell it on Ebay and use the ASrock, you'll probably make money off it lol...

LOL, you are also guilty of not noticing the fact that he already recieved the CPU and motherboard for free. I am founding a self help group for us folks that read to fast and not catch all the details :D

But yeah, I love my ASRock board. It let me keep my AIW XT800XT for a bit longer till the new fangled DX10 cards come out and still upgrade to a S939 now.

Three reasons I didn't get the ASRock DualSATA, #1 the Newegg reviews, #2 I've never bought anything but ASUS w/ NVIDIA chipsets, and most importantly #3 no SLi support.
I figured if I'm going to do this I going to give myself the opp to upgrade to SLi without having to buy another mobo in the future.

Just because he can't afford to buy 2 now, doesn't mean that he won't do so in the near future. Besides, it's FREE. Unless you plan on buying the Asrock motherboard for him, I'd say his deal is unbeatable.

Just a note on SLI. It may not be the thing for you man think about it before you spend alot of money some where you dont need too, With DX10 around the corner do you really wanna spend 300$ on a new card just so it's PCI-E that will probably be about thesame preformace wise as the card your already using? Then when you get around to getting the SLI card all the DX10 stuff gonna be out and you have to run paired cards to get SLI to work so your basically going to have to buy 2 new card to make SLi worth it when that time comes around.... Seems like spending 60$ on a board now and saving the SLI board you have now till you accually want to go SLI is the better plan in this kind of situation... Is what ever card you buy for cheap now really going to be the card you want to run SLI a year from now? Save the money box the ASUS board and get an ASrock or one of the other PCI/Agp boards out their if you dont like ASRock. (But as a note as some one who build computers for living i've used alot of the ASRock boards and have nothing but good thing to say about it, excpet it powers up a little weird)

man, that scared me, they must have changed the thing around on there, because i bought an X1800XT from the Egg and taht was the link that was in my order confirmation.... man you had me scared thinking i brain farted and bought an AGP card for my new PCI-E setup i just bought... but no there was an X1800XT Pci-E on the egg because thats what is on my receipt at $239.00, i will keep looking though

He is going SLI so that card wont work anyways.
 
well its food for thought.. if he wants two cards.. just buy this X1800XT right now and run it until he can afford a mobo with the ATI chipset on it and then buy another and have dual X1800XT..

That card does peek my interrest but I don't think the ATI brand likes me much. Since my last two died with in 3 week of purchase. AIW X800XT & X1600PRO thats when I bought my 7800GS OC.

Then again as Revant said earlier DX10 cards are coming, so maybe I should hold out and just upgrade my cpu and ram, and give Scott (landlord) the s939 mobo an cpu :confused:
 
Well what i was saying is you can take the Mobo and the CPU get a 60$ mobo keep the 7800GS which is pretty close to the top of line and all your options are covered, you can keep everything and if you ever get a DX10 PCI-E card down the line you can use the ASUS board and have SLI options open. And all with out buying a new 300$ card to replace an identical one just to fit in a new slot... IF you get the ASUS board you might wanna look into 939 AGP only boards since u have a PCI-E board anyway, im not to up todate on that but they should be cheap...


check this out, top of the like AGP board, price has crashed since PCI-E like 68$ can keep everything and if u get a new PCI-E card u got the other board anyway....

Let's say you go with your original plan with getting a free S939 CPU and NF4 SLI board like you want. Save the SLI motherboard for when you can afford a pair of DX10 cards and instead of buying a PCI-E new card now for $250-$300 when your 7800GS AGP card is still a good card, buy a S939 AGP board for $60 and use that 7800GS with your new 939CPU.

You should examine this SLI route more though. It is NOT a good upgrade path. It is a good extreme peformance path to take, but buying a mediocre card now and then another in a year is foolish, when in a year, a single current gen card will outperform a pair of SLI cards from the previous generation. Take for example, someone that bought a 6800GT last fall for $300 and now is buying another one now for $200. That is $500 worth of video cards which will not match $500 of current nVidia or ATI cards. Food for thought. If it were me, I would snag that ASRock ULi board, throw in your 7800GS card and hold on till the DX10 cards come and buy the best one that you can afford.

If I don't decide to go with with SLi board it's going to go in my landlord PC, that's how I got it, rent for pc build. Now im looking into the s939 AGP mobos a little closer. Wish I could find one w/ the nforce4 chipset, but I don't think they made any.
